Thank you very much for filming this. Longframlington was on its very best behaviour for the day. Shame I didn't get to see any of the other layouts as I was operating single-handed but your video helps make up for it. One of the best small shows I've been to.

2:21 sums up railways in Britain.

IGNORANCE IS BLISS ??? At 6:31 an impossible train !!!! The first two coaches are BR Mk1 coaches with Buckeye semi-auto rigid couplers, Pullman corridor gangways with rubbing bars and Retractable buffers. The 3rd & subsequent carriages are all GWR types with British Standard Suspension gangways, screwlink couplers & non retractable buffers. You CAN'T COUPLE THESE TYPES TOGETHER in real life, without special adapter plates being fitted to the BSS gangways !!!!!! In 1923 His Majesties Railway Inspectorate (HMRI) recommended that ALL the "Big Four" Railways (GWR; SR; LMS; & LNER) adopt the Buckeye semi-auto rigid coupler, as it had been proven to be stronger and much safer in derailments than the "Screwlink" chain type coupling, that allowed coaches to roll over in derailments. The SR & LNER as well as the Pullman Company all employed the Buckeye couplings & the wider semi-rigid Pullman type Corridor gangway on all their mainline stock. The GWR & LMS resisted this change on cost grounds. So continued to use the Screwlink chain type coupling and the narrower British Suspension type corridor gangway, with a rounded top. Creating operational problems of working the two types of mainline stock on Inter-regional services. When BR came into existence in 1948, it agreed it would use Buckeyes & Pullman Gangways on all its new coach designs which began appearing from 1951 ! Hence as BR coaches were introduced on all Regions, they had to be kept in complete formations on the ex GWR & LMS lines, as they were incompatible with those companies coaches. On the SR & ER Regions BR Mk1's could be mixed with the ex SR & LNER types !!! At 6:58 another Ignorant mistake. Rebuilt Bulleid Pacifics did not exist in the days of the "Devon Belle" Pullman train. These sorts of daft mistakes on Exhibition layouts are now far too common. Revealing that modellers today do not avail themselves of the necessary reference material needed to built any "Model Railway". Probably because they are stupid enough to honestly think you will find everything you need on the Internet. Instead of using specialist book shops to start building a library of quality Railway Reference books. Indeed I certainly have stopped going to normal Model railway shows, as they have degenerated to the level of childish "Toy Train Set" shows for children & the ignorant masses !!!

My last memory of being a passenger on a mainline steam-hauled train, is on the Fenchurch Street - Tilbury- Shoeburyness Line - coming home to East Tilbury from the dentist in Grays, not long before they stopped running steam, looking out the carriage window and getting soot in my eye. That must’ve been in 1962, when I was 10. 60+ years later and I still love doing it!

LACK OF RESEARCH - SPOILS FAR TO MANY LAYOUTS TODAY !!! Some nice looking layouts. But it is becoming increasingly obvious that many layouts owners have zero comprehension of the existence of the BR Rule book when it comes to "Operation" and even less savvy about signalling and signalling rules !!! Further if your layout is to appear in public exhibitions then you can expect to get "shot down in flames" when you get it all wrong !! For example the "Minories" layout is using Class 31 locos in BR blue that have "marker lights & red tail lights", neither of which were fitted or functional in that era. Only the last vehicle of a train, was obliged to have a "Tail lamp" on a lamp bracket & incorporated electric lights were prohibited. And even if it was a light engine movement a "tail lamp" was required on the rear. Because only a "lamp" was acceptable as the "end of train" marker. The exception was the SR which had a rule/dispensation to allow an electric red rear light, on certain SR EMU's, DEMU's & certain locos (classes 33/71/73/74) with SR type twin roll round illuminated blinds that included "red" sections. What all this reveals is a serious lack of research, and I suspect that an increasing number of modellers think they can rely on the Internet for all they need. No, much of the information you need will not appear on the Internet due to increasing copyright protection law and heavy fines for those who flout said laws. So what you need is good quality railway "Reference" books, pertinent to your particular layout, or regional area. There are many specialist secondhand railway book shops (few of whom advertise on the Internet, only in Railway & model railway magazines) for these reference books, as such books are often only printed once. They can also be found on a number of Steam Railway station bookshops such as the SVR & WSR as well as Peco at their Beer, Devon shop ! And if you are to get the correct carriages & locos on your layout, especially when the layout is based on a real location. Then you also need access to ex BR internal documents such as "CWNA" (Carriage Working Notice Appendices) and of course EWN (Engine Working Notices), for the line and area you are modelling. Both of which were usually "bi-annual" publications issued in conjunction with each Summer & Winter timetable. And organisations such as the Southern email Group, have access to these old documents, which for a small fee, you can get your hands on. Also certain secondhand railway book shops. These ex BR documents will reveal exactly which carriages (including the SET & individual coach numbers & their types & formation) working on the various Regional Divisions & even specific routes. And in the case of the EWN, all the loco rosters for a specific shed, and what loco type was rostered to each specific job, which will also reveal all the light engine movements, time on shed for watering & coaling, and even when "foreign" crews were booked to use the loco for parts of the locos scheduled roster !!!

@@SPRailwaysThanks for watching! I wanted to capture some of the feel of being there, since I'm not experienced enough yet to go for the close-up shots (and I feel really self-conscious that I'm blocking people's view while I'm filming, so I tend to get in and out as soon as possible). Of course if I really wanted to portray the truly authentic experience, I should have just filmed the back of someone's head. 🤣
