This should be required viewing in high school and college. It would save so much heart ache and frustration. To know 4.5 tennis looks like this and isn't something that is slightly sub-Federer. 4.5 is top 10% of players in the world, and it looks like this.

I've noticed MEP beats 4.5s who can't volley or hit overheads. That 12-year-old destroyed him, despite not being much "better" than the 4.5s he's beating, because that 12-year-old could play net competently. No one at 4.5 hits hard enough to hit through MEP from the baseline, but it's really not *that* hard to volley his balls away - most just don't practice it enough.

I've never seen MEP do so many unforced short shots. It's like they're both giving each other much more opportunities to approach than they would a normal offensive player.

I wonder if it’s the style- both players may be unfamiliar playing against someone who plays similarly to them.

Why didn't MEP use more of the very high, deep lobs? They were clearly very effective and forced his opponent to wait, reset, do an defensive shot, and even miss. MEP even realised that they were effective and said something "my only hope is the sun" . Was he going easy on his opponent? Why? He's a much higher skill level than MEP , he doesn't need MEP''s help or pity. I'm disappointed in MEP not trying his hardest.

MEP should have used the first set after the first 4 games to try out some different strategies like deep, high lobs. The few times that shot happened child seemed to have trouble looking into the sun and was forced to wait until after the bounce had returned to a low height to take the shot and so was unable to press their advantage and had to resort to a defensive shot. MEP coould have used that to frustrate and wear out his opponent. Why didn't he? I'm sure the thought occured to him?.

MEP wasn't bringing his A game in this game. in his game against orange shirt he had great precision and could choose to do a down the line pass or a lob whenever he wanted but that was missing from this game and it didn;'t look to me like the child opponent hit much harder or deeper from the back or anything than orange shirt
@lordsneed9418
@lordsneed9418 9 күн бұрын
why didn't green shirt hit his balls deeper ? It looked like most of orange shirt's opportunities came from green shirt hitting the ball slowly to the service line. It's not like you need to rip a tonne of speed or a tonne of topspin to hit a ball deep. You can just put a very easy and controllable amount of speed and top spin to get. kind of lob-ish forehand that lands deep and is hard for the opponent to put pace on or get a good angle with.

I think MEP would be an awesome hitting buddy, he gets everything back and has no ability to hit winners. He is perfect for practice. The girl was not aggressive enough. Every short ball she should be chipping and volley, MEP cant pass

The guy in blue definitely needs to play against 5.5 players. In CA we call guys who play down "sand baggers". He's not getting much out of the competition and should play folks who can are a step ahead/read their opponents and execute shots that put their opponents on their heels. Things happen much more quickly at the next level. The guy he played is a decent 5.0 but did not really pressure the guy in blue - who seemed to have all the time in the world to set up a point. The elite D-1 players punish weak points and hit deeper and more forceful shots. I don't think the guy in blue even broke a sweat.

I used to have a coach that played his matches like this. He was in his 50's and while he had better mechanics than MEP does, he modified his game to be like MEB in order to win with consistency, court position, shot variation and energy conservation. Though I find it boring to watch, it worked - I saw him take apart a couple of good 5.0 players.

I can see how frustrating players like these can be. Their main goal is to put the ball back into the other side of the court. Nevertheless, it is a skill in itself. Sadly, most average players will beat themselves out of impatience and frustration against an MEP. By the way, please increase the playback speed to 1.75, it then miraculously becomes a NORMAL match ;-)

To play S&V, you need athleticism and quickness in addition to skill. If you are not quick then you have to have a big serve. Look at the best S&V pros like Edberg, Rafter, Sampras, Becker. They all possess either athleticism or power or both (like Sampras). At rec level, unless you're significantly more athletic or powerful, S&V is suicide.
