When I played my first bantam game, none of the opposing players came near me due to my giant height of 6'2" as well as having the physique of a running back. I have happy memories of creating "welcome to bantam" moments on all the other teams and took pride in that fact. And despite my lack of skill in skating or scoring (more of a playmaker), I was often on lines with star players for my innate ability to intimidate the other team with my height and girth. Of course, that only lasted for a couple of years; however, my reputation had cemented itself on the rink and gave me the confidence to continue my "reign of terror" on the ice. But that said ... a word of warning to all you young players. This was back in the early 80s, way before anyone cared about concussions and it's probably the reason I suffer from debilitating migraines to this day. So be careful out there kids. Believe you me, it's not worth it.

The most common reason for fighting in youth hockey is poor officiating. The refs must keep the game under control by stopping poor sportsmanship at the outset.

True story - setting aside the enforcer attitude, there will always be those kids that are just a little bit bigger and have a mental bent to do stuff like this. Unfortunately, there are far too many refs that let it go. So, it comes down to the players to moderate the game. I grew up in NC and GA (southeast USA for you Canucks :)). My boys loved to play ice hockey, and we saw this all the time. Had a long talk with one of our coaches about this crap - and he explained this is why fighting exists. The players moderate the ice when the refs are braindead. This coach came out of the north, was my senior and knew more about ice hockey than I could ever hope to know. Fast forward a few years, and my eldest son is playing a tour of Canadian teams just north of the border... going from rink to rink north of Lake Ontario. This was always interesting. Well this one team got feisty. It's 9am, the Canadian team is already drunk, their parents are drunk (nothing against the parents - nicest people I've ever met), and things get chippy. After there are a couple of cheap shots against our team, my son goes out (he's short but fast and ripped) puts two of the other players into their bench and breaks an arm or two. He did get one roughing call, but everyone started to play the game after that :) Oh, the goon in this video that does the slew foot? Tacky I'm about to retire here in Atlanta. Might pick up a few youth hockey games to see how things are going.@@hockeyfan

The no goal call is actually the correct call as you can see at 0:10 of the video the puck is falling through the air towards the white player on the ice. You then see the player swing his arm and punch the puck towards the goal and the next time you see the puck is in the net. I would say this is conclusive that the player deliberately pushed the puck into the net with the glove, which is not a good goal. The fact that the officials got together and rendered the correct call in this situation is impressive, well done by them. There could have been better penalty selection though, and the offside call is clearly the incorrect call. Either the official's partner or mentor should advise him to take an extra moment and err on the side of a late offside call rather than jumping the gun and making an incorrect offside call. It's important to remember that, just as the players in this game are young and building their skills, the officials at this level also tend to be young and do not yet have a wealth of experience to draw from. While it can be frustrating, it's important to keep things in context and try to support your young officials, not run them out of the game.
