Completely agree with you about the honda switchgear - much more satisfying to use IMO than circuit pad types which can go wrong often. Varadero is a much overlooked adventure bike in favour of more fashionable gs.

Can I ask you about the temperature on your bike? My fuel injected model ('03) temperature gauge shoots up to half way real soon from cold (three bars) and just stays there. The cooling fan comes on soon when in traffic. With my Mk1 ('99) carb bike on the other hand, the gauge, which is different, goes to about a quarter of the way up and stays there. If I sit in traffic a good while, the gauge will creep up to halfway and the fan will come on. Both bikes have had recent coolant changes and I'm pretty sure that there are no air pockets in the cooling systems of both bikes. The fuel-injected is obviously running hotter than the carb bike. I was wondering about your bike? Where does your temp gauge sit when riding around, and how soon does the fan come on when in traffic?

Good review that covers quite a lot of daily driver questions!👍 Currently I'm owning a Transalp 600v, you could call it the little sister of the 'Dero. Where there is a lot similar to the Dero, I'm very curious if the extra power and added weight is a plus or a minus compared to the TA. I've kinda out grown the TA and am looking to get something similar but with more power. Would a newer Africa Twin not out perform the Dero in any way? I'm curious of your thoughts and thinkings.. Thanks in advance!
@andyjdaviestjk
@andyjdaviestjk 3 ай бұрын
Hi, yes I like the transalps and yes you definitely will feel a difference in the power especially two up or just at longer distance more power on tap so you can just cruise on the same gear if you want to and it will sit at high speed all day long, the dero is heavy but you only really notice when pushing it around, the Africa twin is only slightly lighter by a few lbs, and the power is almost the same. I have not ridden an Africa twin but have sat on a few and they are about the same height but feel easier because of the narrow seat, New bikes scare me with the amount of electronics and as always I have heard lots of horror stories about the failures. The dero is a reliable bike and the new versions are great I think the latest model is a 2019 model, it depends on what you are going to use it for, I use mine every day for commuting and go touring around the UK, I would never take it off road as my skill level is zero off road and it's heavy but I would probably be the same with the africa twin. It looks like a good bike and some of the guys I know like them but they always sell bikes after a couple of years so again not sure on a high mileage one with all the electrics how they age. My dero has now got 61,000 miles and apart from serviceable items never misses a beat, you get a lot of bike for your money and you can also fix a lot yourself with basic tools and skill level, like myself, hope this helps 👍

@andyjdaviestjk
@andyjdaviestjk 4 ай бұрын
Yep same here but I realised that my main commute is around 20 miles a day and it's a mix of roads and also now I sway on the side of comfort, I love sports bikes but I get far more use out of my dero and also the advantage of an upright riding position is lovely plus being able to load up the bike for weekends away and still ride relatively fast and in comfort. I have dropped it twice over the years and no damage and found it knocked over onto a hedge and again no damage and I'm sure a sports bike would have cost a lot more in those scenarios. I love vfrs and sports bikes and never thought of this style of bike but now I would not go back, good luck with your decision, let me know how you decided.

Great Bikes, only one thing i would check when buying one of these apart from the obvious service history is the overflow pipe in the fuel tank, if the pipe is blocked then water does not drain from the filler cap through the fuel tank and rusts inside the tank, you can see the pipe inside the filler cap, take thin piece of wire and poke through the hole in filler cap and make sure it is clear and part of serviving routine.

Good to see you got it sorted. I've gone a bit further than that with de-linking the brakes as well. So in the end it sounds like it was the front left brake binding a bit, which pushes the secondary master cylinder on the left fork leg, which gets the rear brake binding? I take it the fluid was boiling and causing the lockup?
@andyjdaviestjk
@andyjdaviestjk 7 ай бұрын
@VFRBoy. Partly, it is also the back brake hose has deteriorated as well so I need a set of braided hoses,was it a difficult job de linking the brakes?
@VFRBoy
@VFRBoy 7 ай бұрын
@@andyjdaviestjk not overly difficult, just needed three short braided lines made up to take the fluid from the outer 2 pistons to the middle piston, so that all 3 pistons actuate together. This required a double banjo bolt on the outer piston hose. I have seen another way which creates a split in the line further up but I thought the short line with double banjo was more graceful. The secondary master on the left fork was blanked off with a bolt to seal it and packed with grease so it wouldn't wobble about, and the line off the rear brake master cylinder also blanked off where it goes off to do things at the front, so it only pushes fluid to the rear.. I have it in the shop right now as it's still playing up and like you I think it's the centre piston not fully retracting and skimming the disc. The disc is also badly blued and as it may be warped I'm having a new one fitted while the rear caliper is cleaned out and regreased with new seals. I have left the original brake lines in place as they're in good condition and I don't feel the need for "track-day feel" braided lines on the Vara, and a softer braking response may actually be better in the looser surfaces of gravel/dirt roads. I'll post a YT vid when I get it back in a couple of days!
@andyjdaviestjk
@andyjdaviestjk 7 ай бұрын
@@VFRBoy will have to give that some thought, I find the link brakes fairly good on the Vara but have wondered if delinking them would increase the rear brake power as it's a heavy old lump, look forward to your video 👍
@VFRBoy
@VFRBoy 7 ай бұрын
@@andyjdaviestjk I previously had a 1998 VFR800Fi which had linked brakes, slightly different configuration but largely the same. One thing I don't like is the loss of "trail braking", where a touch of rear brake tightens up a line going into a turn. The linked brakes instead freeze the suspension a bit, and lock the line I'm taking. Similarly a touch of front brake can stand the bike up quickly in preparation for hard braking, but again the linked brakes make it all weird and stiff instead.
@VFRBoy
@VFRBoy 7 ай бұрын
How did you get on with this? I have a rear caliper rebuild kit arriving tomorrow to solve the same problem. I think it's related to the middle piston which is driven off the secondary master cylinder on the left fork leg. I have isolated (de-linked) that but the rear pads/disc is still binding - I'm going to rebuild the caliper and also check out the PCV and delay valve. I was also getting a weird resonance with the rear pedal, whereby the rear disc and front left disc (I think) would rapidly alternate actuating. It's as if the pads were vibrating on the disc instead of gripping. Quite disconcerting. Anyway cheers from Australia
@VFRBoy
@VFRBoy 7 ай бұрын
@andyjdaviestjk in one video you mentioned the rear brake caliper binding - did you ever get to solve it? I'm having a devil of a time with mine - rear caliper gets red hot and locks onto the disc, but then after bashing the brake pedal it seems to release for a bit. I'm going down the road of de-linking the brakes but haven't solved it yet.
@andyjdaviestjk
@andyjdaviestjk 7 ай бұрын
VFRBoy, it is still a bit sticky and after talking to the mechanic on the MOT it's the rear brake hose it's deteriorated and is expanding when I press the pedal but not contracting back into shape and the pads are not retracting, it improved a hell of a lot when I changed the piston seals on the caliper and regreased them but everything on the braking system is now new including all the master cylinders and it's still binding slightly, so braided hoses are the next step .

Is it better to clean your brake rotor's at the end of every ride to get rid of any build up? cause my clothes are always black at the end.
