@@johantanjung4905 Hey Johan, it depends on my mouthpiece tip opening and the sound I want. If I’m using a 7* or less and I want a mellow jazz tone I use LaVoz med soft or Vandoren Jazz or Green Box reeds. If I’m using a larger tip opening I use the red box so I can push it. If I’m playing pop, rock, blues, R&B, funk I play the red box regardless of the tip opening so I can get an edge, projection, and growl easier. Does that make sense?
@joshbrinkmansaxophoneclari9614
@joshbrinkmansaxophoneclari9614 2 жыл бұрын
So here I’m using a red box because my Ponzol is a 110 tip opening. A darker reed seems stuffy to me on this particular mouthpiece. But on some of my other videos I’m using a 7* so on a mellow jazz tune I’ll do a LaVoz med soft which is a darker reed brand. It’s all about trying different combinations.

@@motivation89742 Vintage Conns play best with large chambered pieces. For hard rubber, my new favorite mouthpiece maker for large chambered pieces is Arnold Montgomery. These are hand made and affordable, especially if you catch one of the many holiday sales he has. He has several HR large chambered designs depending on the type of music you play. If you play mostly jazz get one without a baffle like the Luna, Blue Heron (darkest), or Ankh. If you play lots of R&B or funk, the Phoenix has a baffle with lots of power. If you are really on a budget, Vandoren also makes a large chamber hard rubber V16. I just got an Arnold Montgomery Phoenix HR piece and it burns on my 10M.

Great sound and playing! Love the growl you get! The old Conns kill. I use my '36 10M for R&B gigs and it always delivers in spades. One day I might try a The Core mpc too. If I am not wrong it was said to be based on the Brilhart Hard Rubber design. However the original BHR I have sounds totally different. But then again it is the player as they say. Not the mpc.

Thank you for the comment! It is great to get positive feedback since I just recently switched to a 10M! Yes, they say the Core is modeled after the Brilhart. I've never played a vintage Brilhart but from the sound clips I've heard it seems like the Core is brighter and projects better. I would say it is more like a Link with more projection and slightly more edge. I really like it as it gets great low and altissimo range and a lot of control (as you hear in the growl). People on gigs have even commented how good the pairing sounds. At times I wish I had a slightly louder piece but all my baffled pieces either have less control or play too sharp on the 10M. Do you mind sharing what you are using on R&B shows with your 10M?
@Jazzznbluezzz1
@Jazzznbluezzz1 5 жыл бұрын
@@joshbrinkmansaxophoneclari9614 No I don't mind at all. I think it is great fun to share experiences about gear with fellow saxophone players. Regarding the more louder and wilder R&B gigs I am not stuck on one particular mouthpiece but I use a variety of pieces on and off. However my all time favorite for now is an Allen 20TD. I think it might be quite comparable to The Core tone wise. Besides that I occassionally play on a bronze Berg 105/2 M that is brighter and has a great low end. For even more edge and loudness a Dukoff D9. I also have a Metalite M9 in my case that is a great match with the 10M. Believe it or not but I have also gigged with a white Brilhart Streamline 7* and an Ebolin 3* and a Great Neck 5 that did the job. I am actually a Brilhart player. That said I just recently I 'discovered' a plastic Conn Comet 6 that really surprised me. It is quite different however just as loud as a Metalite and sounds clear and articulate but can growl nasty too. Very easy to play and the notes just pop out. Long story short I still like to experiment and like both metal and hard rubber pieces. However the 20TD would be the one I would take with me to a desert island.

@@Jazzznbluezzz1 Some great pieces here and many I haven't tried yet. As long as I have been playing I've never had an opportunity to try a Berg or a Dukoff. I will say that with the 10M the Core outperforms everything I've tried so far. It pairs well with my new Cannonball also. On my Chu Berry, the SR Tech Pro and the Core are a good match but I lean towards the SR Tech with that horn. I've also played a Ponzol M2 in the past which is nice and loud with really easy altissimo, but the Core has a nicer tone with better control in my opinion. My NY Link also sounds good on the 10M but it is not quite loud enough on an R&B gig. I have an AM Luna that sounds good but it has a huge chamber and kind of tires me out after a while. I highly recommend the Core to pretty much anyone regardless of your set up! I'm actually unfamiliar with Allen, I'll have to check that out. Thanks for sharing your gear thoughts! I'm glad you enjoyed my videos. I have several others that feature some of my different set ups discussed here on my channel!

Hey James, nope I haven't played on a fusion. I went to a music store hoping to find a Berg Larsen and found this SR Pro used instead (they didn't have a Berg). It played so well and the price was so good I picked it up. It kind of all depends on the player and the playing situation. I even switch set ups on a weekly basis depending on the gig I'm playing and even the environment I'm playing in. Sometimes a piece that sounds too bright works well on the gig esp. if you are playing with a loud band in a big space or outdoors. So try it at home and on a gig with a PA before you decide if it is "too bright" or not.

Hey Josh do you have your G# trill key still original? I'm looking at a 1925 NW2 but the guy removed the G# trill key and reversed the spring on Eb so to get Eb he said you use 1 and 3 right hand have you ever heard this ? I'm not sure I will like this but what a beautiful horn , can you tell me what you think much appreciated
@joshbrinkmansaxophoneclari9614
@joshbrinkmansaxophoneclari9614 6 жыл бұрын
Hi James, thanks for the question. I do have all of the original keys on the horn. I have never fingered Eb the way you are describing by using 1 and 3 on the right hand. I think that would be a pain going from D to Eb because you have to move way more fingers to go between notes. I would be hesitant to buy a Chu Berry with even more difficult fingering because the egos are already a little more difficult to navigate than a modern horn. It also may make the horn harder for techs to work on because the rolled tone holes already post a challenge. I highly recommend the New Wonder II's in their original form though. Some people have modified them to make the egos more modern, which I would totally go for!

Thanks for sharing your set ups. I've found that some MPs play sharp on these old horns. Also, some MPs play stuffy on them while others really shout and sound huge. I play a lot of R&B and funk gigs so I need projection often. I have a rubber Otto Link that really doesn't project well on it while my SR Tech, Ponzol, and Saxquest get a great huge tone. The Ponzol sometimes plays sharp but I love the darker color of it. The SR Tech tends to play brighter and the Saxquest is right down the middle. Perhaps I'll try one of these in your list one day when I can get my hands on one. I'm glad I was able to convert someone to vintage Conns! An old 10M is also on my bucket list!
