I played the original Shenmue 1 on Dreamcast when it came out, I was 11 years old. It blew my little kid mind and opened it in many ways. I still remember begging my parents to buy me the "Walkthrough" magazine. Eventually they said yes, and I figured out how to find the Old Warehouse #8. Then the whole game opened up and the rest is history. Love this game. Thank you so much for this great video. You've got a gift!

I remember a few weeks ago, playing Scam of the Century and choosing Edd first, and when I got to the segment with the nuts, I thought on-impulse as well as said out loud "HOLY SH|T, THIS GAME HAS A DEDICATED 'DOUBLE DEEZ NUTS' MECHANIC!" And that's what I call it to this day.

Sometimes I imagine my Ed Edd n' Eddy Rétro Future AU* having a video game adaptation, where the main game is based on the console trilogy's playstyles, and it has some extra minigames based on the flash games. For example, since the AU is Y2K/Frutiger sci-fi centered around Cyberspace(which sounds completely unhinged out of context) it could explain Lost in Space as being an actual thing to an extent and not just Edd's dream; since it wouldn't be too out of place in a Cyberspace dimension, and with the addition of retrofuturistic(or, I guess, rétrofuturistic) technology, Eddy might as well get his hands on some kind of spaceship/airship like that. By accidental coincidence, one of the areas is a cave system of tunnels and otherworldly materials, so that could work for a Jawbreaker MIne based minigame. I could go on and on. Candy Machine Deluxe could also work as a basis for customization, in some way. Mainly the UI style, and perhaps have an OST track remixed from the song that plays in it. Maybe the reward for having a high enough style score would be obtaining an apple-and-cinnamon-flavored Chunky Puffs item, if you know what I mean. I[t] could even reference some of the Cartoon Network crossover games that had Ed Edd n' Eddy co-featured in them, not mentioned in this video, like Summer Resort, Bean Bag Tag, and even Tokyo Blows with its... incredibly cursed sumo-wrestler-ified Eddy. My idea for the main game is that it has two modes, one where all of the Eds follow each other like Mis-Edventures, the other that lets you control and place them seperately like Jawbreakers! but more polished obviously. I think a game like that could work, as having them together would be more convenient and obviously more useful, but the separate movement is proven by Lost Vikings/Fireboy & Watergirl to be good for puzzle solving or just in case the non-selected Eds need to be still for a moment for whatever-reason. I'm thinking more of a Metroidvania kind of level progression, though, considering the story of the written material the AU's story is told through. If that ever does happen, however and why-ever it does, I'll probably not include bits from every game, for obvious reasons. I'll definitely leave out the ones that feel like generic games with the show's branding slapped on to it, like Build the Faces Of and (*My fanseries of the show that's an alternate universe, with things like artwork and written material to go with it. I talk about it a lot because I am actively working on it as I type, and I'm also hyperfixated on the show itself currently. I can't help but talk about it, as weird and perhaps "cringe" as it may be.)

This may be some false info but iirc one of the VAs who worked on Shenmue III said that they was instructed to make the dialogue readings a little clunky on purpose to try and recreate some of the charm of the first two where some of the VAs just obviously couldn't speak English and were just reading lines as best as they could. Going from memory and can't remember where I saw this so take it with a pinch of salt I suppose. Edit just to add that I thought this was a fantastic video btw, really enjoyed it!

@@steve5123456789 Yes, I actually mention that in the video when I'm quoting an old article, but it's still not quite the same, the words "push" are listed along with the button and a "failure" message appears when you fail, I'm being pedantic I know, but the point I was trying to make is that future games would end up doing QTEs EXACTLY like Shenmue did it, minus the exact sound effects, setting a definitive standard for how QTEs looked and played, while also coining the term used to describe them up to the present day. I was just trying to illustrate how important Shenmue is to the formation of the modern QTE, even though it didn't do it first.

I had no idea how deep the Shenmue iceberg was. Shenmue 1 is probably my favourite game, playing it in 2000 was like playing something from the future. I even remember still thinking it looked better than most 360 games until at least 2007. I had never heard of Shenmue for the Saturn and Shenmue Online so this video was a really interesting watch. Yeah that has a very weird story. Basically, they went through the whole Nintendo power review of the game, which bashed the game I believe, and grabbed those 3 words in some paragraph of the article that was talking about something else & printed it like this 😂🤦‍♂️ It's a very sleazy tactic. Also this is why magazine quotes on game cover and art means shit!
