One of the original 2 guitar players ( Adrian Smith) was doing a solo project so the band hired a guitar player to take his place for the time he was working on the solo project. They decided to keep him on because he was a good fit with the entire band. That's why they have 3 guitarists now. The original 2 are Dave Murray and Adrian Smith. These guys are epic.

I enjoyed your appreciation of Iron Maiden! There are so many wonderful songs yet to discover, if you are not familiar with some of these yet. I recommend Infinite Dreams, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, Where Eagles Dare, The Red and the Black, The Book of Souls, Dance of Death, The Longest Day, Brighter than a Thousand Suns, Brave New World, Ghost of the Navigator, Lost in a Lost World, Stratego, Hell on Earth, Revelations…and so many others. You will discover your own personal favorites of course. I recently discovered the fantastic Russian band Aria. They are totally new to me, and I am impressed with their melodies, riffs, and guitar harmonies. I can tell they were also influenced by Iron Maiden.

Because Adrian left the band, Janick replaced him. And when Adrian came back Janick could stay. And with three guitarists they can play stuff live that they only could do on albums.

I'm a Maiden fan for 40+ years but not a musician. I would guess pretty strongly that Steve Harris was a huge proponent of an additional guitarist, because it adds to what can be produced live in the studio, and of course live in concert. I bet a few southern rock bands also had an influence on his thinking.

The guitarist play almost the same thing in harmony. That why most songs have 2 solos, some have 3 solos like Dance of Death En Vivo. Anyone of them can play the others solos, and they switch sometimes.

In the beginning you say " i know Iron Maiden" at the end you ask why there are 3 guitar players.. If you know them ,then why that question ? Adrian Smith left Iron Maiden and Janick Gers replaced him, afterwards Adrian came back and Janick got the opportunity to stay in the band. And thats why there are 3 guitar players.

well human nature double album was quite an achievement and definitely helped to raise some bars and not just for the band and what they can accomplish with what they already have what they have achieved music production both audio and visuals
