It's amazing that UW and NASA didn't know the basic issues in making a composite pressure vessel with external pressure. The main asset of Carbon composites is the carbon fiber, which is wonderful in tension but not as wonderful in compression. For the compression, they are relying on the epoxy matrix, which is often brittle and not nearly as strong as the fiber and more prone to issues in manufacturing and use.

With regard to being bolted in, he is correct that Jim Cameron was bolted into DeepSea Challenger. However, the differences are: his was designed using tested and proven methods, his wasn't certified but as Cameron stated many times, he would never carry a paying passenger in it. He was just putting himself in danger in an experimental craft. Huge differences. As stated already, this guy fits right in with OceanGate. Hubris and overconfidennxe were things which that company had a surplus of, humility and common sense was in short supply. Especially when they fire the voices of reason.

And yeah, until they had spotted the wreckage, there was no call to inform the families (and this guy didn’t inform them himself). But they knew it wasn’t a rescue mission. Even if the sub was intact and on the bottom and everybody in it was alive, there was no way to raise it. But it wasn’t, because everybody with half a brain had told Stockton before it happened that it was going to happen, and then they heard a boom. And this guy is still acting as if his friend hadn’t been charging people good money to step into a death trap. They had tested scale models, and the scale models imploded. Every time. And somehow Stockton convinced himself it didn’t matter, but he didn’t tell his prospective passengers that his bright new idea had repeatedly gone whump before it reached 4,000m.

I’m a fiduciary professional licensed by a state board. Even if my client says they want to do something harmful and signs a waiver, I cant endorse their choice and help them self destruct. This is true for finances, mental health, and medical decisions. Understanding that it’s not true of the military and test pilots, still bizarre to defend the same behavior with “look how badly we treated the vehicle while towing and you still got in it.” Gross. These people were not “stepping into the breach,” they were vacationing. I live and work near NASA…they have serious safety issues and a culture of keeping quiet just like the people on this pod. Lots of people know it, and we’re waiting for the next failure that kills people. Using NASA solutions “don’t let that happen” is lame, and some at NASA would agree.
