I have worked everywhere except the school and jail as a clinical Social worker. I work macro now for the government on policy changes in healthcare. I thought I would feel fulfilled, but feel very disconnected from the community. SW aren't as respected in this space and it's disappointing.

Unfortunately, that is the reality for many macro social workers. Who only knew about the policy side of macro work. Hence, the reason I teach my career coaching about the other sides of macro practice. Along with strategies & techniques to blend their passions into their work. Because if you don't like writing or complex processes and timelines to enact change, you will strongly dislike policy, just as an example. The majority of those who start working with me begin with aspirations of doing policy work until I teach them about other ways to do systems-level work. One of the things I wonder about is longevity, obviously someone that is a LCSW has YEARS of experience versus someone that just graduated with an MSW. Most of the jobs that I am drawn to want YEARS of experience and I only have 2 with a Masters in Counseling. Is that just a perception or minimalist thinking on my part? Congratulations Kendall!! I landed my first macro job one-year post-MSW. I don't have any clinical licensure and don't desire to. My first macro job was leadership, and I had no prior leadership experience. Honestly, you don't have enough information to make the determination you came to. Hence, the reason for my career coaching program is to teach you how to find jobs based on your skills, experience, education, needs, and goals. It sounds like you are seeing social work admin jobs that are entirely different from macro social work jobs. I have a video here on my channel explaining the differences based on what they look like in the job market.

As I watched the video, I could relate to it. I've been having more anxiety because of my job. My body has been feeling effected this past week. I booked a vacation in May. My co-worker told me about the EAP program. I've been looking for a job on and off. I'm taking a business and leadership certification. I can tell my family is tired of listening to me complain about my job.

Hi I live in los angeles I recently graduated with my masters in social work and I'm in the process of applying for my associate clinical social worker credential while I'm waiting for that to happen so I can change my career path and increase my income I work as a behaviorist currently and I feel frustrated and stuck I'm just praying and trying to figure out should I leave my current job after I get my credential and move on to something else so I can increase my income and walk in my purpose

Marthea, your a-ha three's were spot on-- basically, if you are thinking about the big picture beyond what your organization is offering you and your clients, perhaps it's time to move on. Personally, I could say I had experienced all of these at my most recent job, but I was at first too overwhelmed, and then later, too comfortable (or lazy as you put it! ;-) to recognize that I needed to move on. When I finally realized the time had come, I just didn't know how to go about it. Your videos have been so eye-opening to me-- thank you!

I’m not a social worker but a retired hospital RN after 22yrs. I’ve been working in Utilization Management from home for the last 2 years. While it’s nice to work from home, but it can be a lot of tedious work and deadlines, timelines, etc. Eventually I know I will transition from this but it’s serving a purpose for now. It was very nice and informative to listen to what was discussed! It makes me much more interested in the macro field. A clinical social worker told me that the MSW degree will open many doors. I see the macro jobs on Indeed and want to attain them.

I currently work in case mgmt without an MSW. In order to pivot into macro social work, would I need to attend a university that has an online MSW program that specializes in macro practice to obtain a career in macro social work?

No, you would not because any profession or background can focus on doing social change work. However, it never hurts to have the foundational knowledge in your toolbox of attending a specialized macro-track MSW degree program.

This topic resonates with me. I'm definitely introverted and stepping into a new macro role. I dread public speaking, but somehow overcome it whenever I need to present. The anxiety is real before the actual day. Somehow I am able to tap into my confident side when necessary.

For me, someone who is 100% introverted in my personal life but 50/50 in my professional life because it is a requirement of my professional mission. When I am talking about the things, I am passionate about, all that subsides. Find what you love, talk about that, and watch your confidence grow. Or you can get a macro job that does not require public speaking because those exist too.
