@osmfencing

If attempting this against a taller opponent, no significant changes are required. However, if your opponent is standing up, this would not be a suitable means of landing a touch on the target area. Please see the other infighting options.

When fencing someone same-handed as yourself, you must correct the distance (distance is closer when R-L fencers) and ensure the thumb is directing the approach of the blade to the intended target (R-R fencer is same as L-L fencer).
@flaze3
@flaze3 Ай бұрын
@@osmfencing you also need to have angulation on the blade. What I am unsure of is whether it's better to parry with that angulation, or parry kind of vertically and then adjust the angle of the blade as you riposte. Thoughts?

Hello(I am Foil fencer) There's a problem with me From some time my attacks started missing (not landing on target). I am verry annoyed with that so can you please tell me some drills or videos to help me to land my attacks more on target.I have practiced targeting very much but no improvement is showing
@osmfencing
@osmfencing Ай бұрын
It is difficult to correct an issue without first analyzing why the action is not successful. Try the following based on diagnosis of action: 1). If falling short, adjust distance or extend your lunge. 2). If opponent is escaping your attack by retreating, adjust the initiation of your attack by shortening distance through a fluid extension of the arm. 3). If passing the target, adjust distance by initiating the attack from further away. 4). If point control is the issue, relax the shoulder and initiate from the hand. Whenever confronted with unsuccessful actions, play around with the execution of that action to try and pinpoint where the issue might be. Try making small adjustments rather than pushing the same action over and over again.
@bradfordprice3781
@bradfordprice3781 27 күн бұрын
Make sure you always take videos of your fencing, whether practice or tournament. The easiest way to diagnose an issue is to be able to view it from a third-party viewpoint. Sit down with your coach or fencing friends on a regular basis and look for things that you and/or your opponents are doing that are leading to success.

Wouldn’t the pronation on that parry 4 make it more of a parry 5? Traditionally parry 4 is supinated. Obviously the pronation gives a better point position for the riposte and feels more natural with a pistol grip.

Second intention is better explained her by Szilagyi beginning at 2:15: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b55gdJeClsXDeas.html . Second intention is not anything that happens after your inital attack as explained here. Those ar simply compund actions. Rather, second intention is moving, not with the first intention of simply directly attacking, but rather with the "second intention" of provoking the open end to move so that you can counter it and then land your attack. Example: Pause after your quick advance. The open end moves to parry quarte. You lunge to the now open side.

Two points to focus on to help improve your attack and avoid effecting a counter attack: 1). Distance 2). Tempo There is no need to be overly aggressive and push an action, especially if you are not sure when to begin the attack. For this reason, you will want to maintain a sense of distance (separation) between yourself and the opponent. Slowing your tempo by "creeping" forward or taking slower advances will give you time to see what is happening and to identify the distance to be right for an attack. Save the "speed" for initiating the attack.

I don't know if I agree this is how flicks are done. You usually need to bend the blade. I don't think it's due to the angle and height. It seems that a lot of people think this is the way due to a Race Imboden video floating around, but I don't think it's correct. Notice that even in this video, the hand elevates after the flick is completed. Further, too much elevation actually negates the effectiveness of a flick because it telegraphs the flick. If a fencer sees you raise your hand to flick, they'll just block it. Flicks work because movement of the point if faster than arm speed. In my opinion, a good flick is actually about timing. You need to press the flick into the lame at the point of contact. The more a blade bends, the easier to accomplish this.
@osmfencing
@osmfencing 4 ай бұрын
Before the timing was changed, how you describe the flick is exactly how it was done. Fencers would use a blade that would bend similar to a noodle and is why the Flickmaster became a popular blade for a time. However, it is significantly more difficult to land a touch by just getting the blade to bend with the current timing (it isn't impossible, but no longer the best approach to landing a touch through flicking). Always a pleasure to see feedback from others. Thank you for the comments :)
@showwhite7320
@showwhite7320 4 ай бұрын
@@osmfencing I don't know if the change in the timing made the flick fundamentally different. It just made us think more. I flicked a lot before the timing change. And I had to really think about why my flicks stopped working. I realized that bend isn't the only reason flicks work. That's not to say that the bend isn't important. Note that flicks with a riposte is easier to land than a direct flick. The reason is that the blade is already moving back with the parry, so the blade ends up bending more when you riposte. However, there is another component to the flick. It's the timing. You can get a flick to go off even the tip isn't perpendicular to the surface. You need to push the flick into the lame at the right time. (If you get the blade to bend enough, then poor timing is more forgiving.) And I think that's why I think fencers like Imboden thought that it was about angle. Just look at this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bb2ie6uC29PdgYk.htmlsi=ppuB3wViwr4xFd7t&t=12 It sure does look like it's purely about angle, no? But angle alone isn't enough. Notice that even here, bend is mandatory. The key is to push the point right at the moment of contact. All the videos on flicking teach that the angle is important. But, look at any fencing match. The following is the first that popped in my search. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ebGZirCI0Z-voac.html Do you ever see fencer in that video use angle to flick? Do you see any have their hand held at the same level as the top of their helmet? It simply wouldn't work in a real bout because hand speed is too slow. Fencers would be able to anticipate and block flicks if you had to raise your hand too high. Flicks are effective because blade speed is faster than the hand. The advantage of blade speed is why the old way of parrying 4 has changed. Previously, you would shift your hand all the way to the left to parry 4. But Russians realized that moving the blade with your fingers is faster as the blade is faster than the hand. (Actually, I think that a combination is best, and the ratio depends upon the distance to the fencer.)

@@osmfencing You have excellent videos that a schlub like me needs.😊 I suspect the problem comes from recording audio through the camera 15 away from the speaker. It captures sound faintly and also reverberates through the large space. The solution, although costly, would be a lavalier mic, either RF (direct input to the camcorder but more costly) or to a little pocket recorder (as I do on home videos, but it's a pain to marry the separately recorded audio to the video with an editing program). Ask someone smarter than I am about these things (just about everyone). Good luck and keep these wonderful videos coming.

I don't know if I agree with this counter 6. It looks beautiful but I don't know if it's useful in a real bout. If the blade is presented so high, you might as well do a parry 4. A counter 6 takes a lot of time. A counter 6 is done to sweep up low attacks. When doing so, a direct riposte is not possible because the opposing fencer will parry. You need to usually incorporate a disengage. Occasionally, I'll see a parry 7 but that's rare. I don't think the mind can think that fast to pull it off.
@osmfencing
@osmfencing 5 ай бұрын
Good points. This parry includes opposition in the riposte permitting a direct riposte and reducing risk of counter parries occurring. That said, like all actions, they are situational and must accommodate the realities of the bout at the time of execution.
@showwhite7320
@showwhite7320 5 ай бұрын
@@osmfencing I geniunely think the riposte is hard to pull off because the target area is much smaller because in a true bout situation, the fencer's arm is going to be extended, the body is going to be flatter, their body is going to be lower in a lunge position, and the opposing fencer's guard will be in the way of doing a direct riposte. (This is also why I think that coaches need to do lunges during their lessons. I know this requires extreme fitness because they would have to replicate this hundreds of times per day, but standing upright is simply unrealistic.) I think the better counter 6 that should be practiced is with a lower attack. Then riposte with a disengage à la Nick Itkin. This was Itkin's bread and butter for the early part of his career for 3 reasons. The disengage opens up a much bigger target. Also most fencers are expecting the riposte at their 6. So the disengage is much more effective. You can also riposte low below their guard and fencers do not instinctively parry with a 7 or 8 or counter.
