This is the most comprehensive series for the 914 and how to do this. Unbelievable! Great job. I wish I had the confidence to do it. Great explanations throughout you set a high bar!

realize it is 2 year now.... but I have a thought about your traction.... get (2) 3" wheels.... attach them to a small swing arm that can pivot.... then have them inline with each drive wheel. take a bicycle tire and lap it over the drive tire and the small 3" wheel..... now pivot the swing arm down.... you have a track!!! then pivot it up.... and you still have a 2 wheel drive that can freewheel just like it does now!
@barefootgaragejax9252Ай бұрын
Traction was my main issue! This idea is killer!
@TheMamonti1Ай бұрын
@@barefootgaragejax9252 I had problems with traction on a electric wheelchair..... so I did what I said above.... and no more traction issues at all.... if you can get the right size tire that will slip over the drive wheel and the small wheel without cutting it it works perfectly.... but even if you have to cut the tire use a piano hinge.. I used a linear actuator to raise and lower the swing arm... I also put a shock on the swing arm wheel since it was on a wheel chair to make the ride super smooth.... I am helping a friend build a trailer dolly and sent him your video... I told him to use a winch and so..... then I said I bet people have done this before and looked on you tube where I found your video.... I told him to use a bottle jack and weld the ball on it... that way if the ground is uneven you can adjust the height on the go! I used a bike tire since the tires on the wheel chair were 1 to 2".....but you may need a atv / golf cart tire due to the width.. but it is still the same concept. Aires came up with a snowblower that uses a similar idea.... called quick trac or something along that.... but it will give you an idea of what I mean.... I just looked it up.... it is called... Rapid trak... check it out! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e52gna54uKyqiKc.html ...... BTW... the higher you can raise the pivot the easier it is to freewheel... you can see the contact surface of the drive tire... the smaller that contact the easier it is to freewheel.... the aires only lifts it a inch or so and leaves to much contact area but still works... if it raised 4 to 6" it is almost the same contact area you have now!

Wow, ultimately a very frustrating 5 episodes to watch. I wonder if you have to love these cars with their hundreds of problems to be able to bring them back from the dead. When I first saw this car I knew it would be an immense undertaking to start basically from scratch with little time and resources. Looks like It ended up being too much for you.

It totally did. If it was my only project, sure, but there was no chance as a back burner deal

I‘m amazed that you thought you could make money on this vehicle that you saved from the wrecker. It has to be a labour of love. If you had put in the hundreds of hours needed you could have put together a real showpiece.

Turning radius was insufferable on my 2006. In 2008 they changed the triple clamps. The new clamps will switch out with no problem. Turning radius improves dramatically, to the positive. Ideally it would be nice to find the newer forks too because they moved the axle to a trailing position. However the 2006 forks will bolt in just fine.

I need to bench test my 914 2.0 engine. What needs to be connected to relay connector to bench test? Thanks
@barefootgaragejax92524 ай бұрын
It may be tough to do out of the car without a dedicated test rig. The only car connections are at the relay board for injectors and the charge/start harness.
@6x6Tortuga4 ай бұрын
So only a single 4 or 5 pin connector to the relay board for power I would imagine. The rest is controlled by the mechanical triggering the injectors@@barefootgaragejax9252

I have a 2006 XB12X which has been off the road a few years but will soon be back on it. For luggage, I slot an old Ventura 62-litre Bike-Pack over the Triple Tail. You can buy them separately from the bike-specific frame and loop they come with. I like the handgrips on your bike. The bike looks better without the screen. But you've certainly been ingenious witht the GPS fitment. I don't use a GPS. Nick

Dude you did a great job getting your camera in some tight spaces! I wouldn’t attempt that job without dropping the exhaust though. Just makes it so much easier. I always use Quad ring seals from the Oring store for the pushrod tubes.They have ones made of Viton. If you’re not familiar with them they have 4 sealing surfaces instead of just 2. I also use Viton valve cover gaskets from Real Gaskets in Elizabethton Tn. They hold up much longer and seal better as well.
@barefootgaragejax92528 ай бұрын
Yes! Those viton valve cover gaskets are the best. The go pro makes it easy to get under the car, but lighting is always the issue

@fredschuttenbeld45718 ай бұрын
You probably noticed that when your power dolly is pulling the trailer, you have more traction than pushing it. Here is what is going on. Because your towball is so much higher then the horizontal centerline of your drive axle/wheels, it has the tendency to push the castor wheel in the ground (more resistance) and lifting the drive wheels in air. The solution would be, kind of a system like, reverse or upside down distribution/equalizer bars.
@barefootgaragejax92528 ай бұрын
Agree! It needs a second connection point to avoid the rotation. I was able to use some straps to prevent 1 direction, but it needs to go both ways.

Nice walk thru! What lift jack did you have under the body, and is it electric or hydrolic? Looking for a decent quality lift.
@barefootgaragejax92528 ай бұрын
It’s called the EZ car lift. Facebook marketplace score. It’s a manual scissor style and you lift/lower with a corded drill. It’s not you can roll it around or pack it up if needed.

Rookie question No need to adjust valves after this is done?
@barefootgaragejax92529 ай бұрын
I would plan on it! You’ll have the rocker off completely, and the tolerance on the valves isn’t much, so just removing and installing the pedestals could change it.

A better solution to this problem is to install some Viton valve cover gaskets. I got mine from Real Gaskets in Elizabethton Tn. The best part is they are reusable! Buy them once and you set.
