In regards to charging a solar generator, this solar panel can do the job, but is obviously limited by it's size (rated at peak 40 watts, but in realistic conditions 30-35 watts from the DC output). If you need greater output, we also offer a 60W, 120W and 400W folding/portable solar panel.

I have the Goal Zero Nomad 7 and 15...the 7 is pretty much useless except for AAA and AA batter charging...it's just such old tech...plus it's about the same weight as my Sunjack 25 Watt....I do keep the 15 around for loaning to folks on the beach (in Mexico mostly) when they see my panels up and come over with their phone or Ipod or speaker or whatever asking if they can borrow some power.....Of course they are both 15 years old or more (i'm dating myself) the new tech is so much better but the old still keeps plugging away. As you can see i'm a lover of solar, too bad it'snot sunny here year around.

@@OldSchoolPrepper Some of the Nomad 7s I have are first generation but I also have some Nomad 7 Plus panels. I believe the Plus panels can be daisy chained. Perhaps that would boost the power they generate so they'd be a bit more useful. Haven't tried that yet though. I have a few Boulder 15's also (in addition to 4 Boulder 30s). Yup, got them all many years ago but they've hardly ever been used so are still in good shape - but bulky! Will have to save up and get some of the lighter weight, newer tech panels.

Fascinating as always. The battle against the deer feels neverending. We finally built a tall feeder stand at the far edge of our property to keep them on that side of things and have our raised bed gardens right up against the house. Can't beat the squirrels though. The raccoons like the feeder stand too and I try to keep a variety of rando foods for them back there. The coyotes really liked the bag of dog food I tossed out there the other day. Unfortunately they're getting hit with mange so we have to keep our dogs far far away (not like we wouldn't otherwise but I don't need them rolling in mangy stuff). My Boston Terrier once tried to befriend a possum before I knew what she was up to. Poor little possum gal was fetal'd as expected but ran off as soon as I caught up to the blossoming (possuming?) friendship!

I never thought of this. I grew a couple varieties of lettuce this year, and one harvest was 9 gallon bagsworth of salad lettuce that I doled out to neighbors. But a lot was wasted. I wasn't able to use nearly as much lettuce as the plants produced, and I didn't want my neighbors to run into their houses and lock the doors when they saw me coming with more lettuce bags, so I learned not to grow more than I can conceivably use of that particular green. Super easy to grow, though. Now I am trying to harvest the seeds per the MIGardener method. Never thought of freezing Swiss chard -- I think that's a terrific idea. I may have missed it in the video but how exactly do you cook with the thawed portion afterwards? Just thaw it and season it and eat it as is?

I’ve done similar tests with strawberries myself so would like to share. I’d like to point out a big difference in method however. You are taking a ‘growing plant’ in soil and putting a layer around it rather than placing an unestablished plant directly into the mix. Just to note that’s a very different test from what I will talk about here. I’m terrible for remembering to water, I planted about 30-40 strawberry runners in soil and a lot would die from dehydration .. oops! But of the survivors basically 100% would survive and grow on. This remains true in my control. And so the test... I mixed my heavy clay soil with the unused chemical including the cotton wool. Important to be unused as urine can burn roots and damage the plant. (always use well-rotted compost people!) The same approximate number were planted and I did my typical forget to water them. There were significantly less plants suffering from dehydration, but dehydration did appear to happen while the soil still felt damp. Of the survivors, here is where it gets interesting, only about 30% grew healthy. In the control I got my typical results of things dying to dehydration, but 100% survival rate of those that managed to push through. Aphids are a problem here but the control had slightly less, suggesting they were perhaps stronger but this was not very conclusive with the numbers tested. Analytical theory. Dehydration while wet. The polymer will hold on to moisture with a lot more strength than the soil making it harder for the plant to obtain water from the polymer material once the overall water % drops below a certain level. So with the polymer you need a greater over all water % in the soil for the plant to get the water it needs. While without, the plant is able to get water out of the soil when there is a lower amount of moisture around. Applying pressure aka poking your finger into the soil will release some water from the polymer making it feel wetter, this can be misleading making you think you do not need to water when you do. This explains why things looked unhappy while the soil still felt ok. However the plus is that the polymer dose enable your soil to hold more water than it typically would, meaning you don’t have to water as often. But please keep reading.. As to the increased number of failures, ouch! New plants are more susceptible to problems, strawberries especially get issues if the crown gets to wet. That is more likely to happen with wetter soil. It’s clear from experience that this is not just bad luck with disease to me. But I can’t pin the cause on anything with out a more scientific test. It could be they were too moist for too long that made issues, it could be they got less nutrients from the soil as a lot of the soil was replaced with a nutrient free gel, making them less resistant. Or it could have been chemicals from the gel itself breaking down. Or a mix of all of those and something else, I just can’t say and would be a fool to point to anyone thing. But the conclusion was that in my testing things were good but went bad pretty quick. I would not recommend anyone waste there money doing this myself. Not because I failed with it and not just for the long term environmental concern ether. There are free alternatives that just work better. Basically.. mulch.. if you cover your soil then the water cant evaporate as much. Likewise don’t use black pots in full sun, black absorbs heat leading to, you guessed it, more evaporation! I’ve seen people suggest sawdust as an alternative mix but this is basically un-rotted compost, so I’d suggest not to. A layer of damp wood on top of your pots or garden will do wonders however, I used cardboard a few times around my trees. Or for the simplest answer ever that lasts basically forever, sit the pots in a larger tray of water. Simple, reusable, works without risk. Perfect for getting strawberries going. So the verdict, don’t cover up the problem by trying to add more water. Fix the problem that is waste water by stopping the evaporation. A final note, don’t seal your soil in with plastic it can make the surface too wet and remove oxygen. Wood works because it can breathe letting air in while acting as a sponge trapping escaping moisture to release it later.

Why does everyone weigh everything, my grandma didn’t have anything and made the best stuff.
@OldSchoolPrepper
@OldSchoolPrepper 8 күн бұрын
for sure, good question. We weigh everything because different salts = different measures. I use Kosher Salt and it's a flake, if you use table salt it's tiny like sand..someone else may use rock salt and it's big like small pebbles. So a teaspoon of all these salts are all different amounts of salt. Your grandma had (or is) making stuff based on her experience...she can look at her hand and know much salt is there and how much to add to her cabbage So let me ask you this, can you just look at your palm and know how much salt to add to a crock of cabbage? Your grandma could but unless she taught you, then you'll have no idea. If you do know I'd love you to give me an estimate of how much salt you'd use and i'll do the math to see how different we are. I've been making sauerkraut for years but I still haven't made it enough to memorize how much to use each time based on feel or touch. I hope I get there someday
