So far I haven't noticed any difference in my noise floor, but I'm hoping it will help to minimize RFI in the shack.

Geez, what a dirty and wide signal on 14.303. Do you know who that was?
@VK5IR2 ай бұрын
I had my Noise Blanker turned on due to strong local PLI and the NB makes strong signals appear wide and dirty, so it was likely a clean signal.

Kind of. In Australia we call them squid poles. I believe they are intendted to be long surf-rods for fishing. haverford.com.au/collections/telescopic-squid-poles/products/5m-telescopic-poles-multi-purpose?variant=12702551769201

How many watts were you running?Conditions this year from my latitude wasn't fantastic, the lower solar flux definitely made a negative impact on propagation on 10m. Heard more VK than previously though I believe. It's really a struggle with 100 watts on SSB frankly, hard to punch through with so many crazy strong stations. Hope to see you in CQ WPX CW? 73 DE LB1TI / LC9A.
@VK5IR3 ай бұрын
I was running 400 watts. Friday's CME finally reached us on Sunday and the bands were fairly quiet during Sunday local time but things were back to normal by Sunday evening.

Hi Antonio. My hexbeam covers 20, 17, 15, 12, 10 and 6m with two active, full size elements on each band.

Did you use a voice keyer at all during the WPX for calling CQ? My voice wouldn't have lasted constant CQ-ing. John VK5JAK (contesting as VK5Y)
@VK5IR3 ай бұрын
Yes, I usually use the voice keyer intergrated into N1MM, however since upgrading to the SunSDR2 DX, I am yet to figure out how to get it working, so I have been using the voice keyer built into the SDR's software.
@JohnVK5JAK3 ай бұрын
@@VK5IRI've got the Yaesu FTDX101D with the FH-2 remote. It works wonderfully for voice keying.

There is a free program called “Morse Runner” you can use to increase your skills. It interfaces with N1MM so you can practice off the air with your N1MM logging software. As a beginning contester and one who is restoring my CW proficiency from years of neglect, I really appreciate “Morse Runner” so I don’t have to drag the other contesters through my entire learning curve. Our goal should be to head copy the incoming callsign the first time, only asking for repeat if QRM, QRN, or QSB interferes. If you are transmitting at a rate of 26 WPM, you need to be able to head copy that rate. If you cannot, slow down your transmit rate until you can. This lets other contesters know so they can slow down. The contest exchange will be much faster at lower CW rate than it is with the large number of repeats.

Nice contact! That "999" on the display shows you are driving the rig into clipping. I've been studying the relatively poor TX audio quality of these rigs and that modulation indicator helps keep the distorted SSB audio a little bit more intelligible. Have you listened to your own audio on a separate receiver? How is it? Mine is terrible. 73,

Yes, it comes and goes but it's there more often than not however I have tracked it down to powerline noise. I hope to pinpoint which pole is the offender, this coming weekend.

I got one so I can use a Corsair HS50 headset with my Icom IC-718. Had to get a "Y" splitter so I can plug the headphones into both the headphone jack and the mic jack of the radio (otherwise only the mic works and no sound from the phones).

@VK5IR8 ай бұрын
South America is a very difficult part of the world to work from VK5. I have VERY little QSOs from SA in my log and most are FT8 and a few SSB. Please beam to VK and hopefully we can work. 20m is the best band for me to SA.

Heard no VK at all here except I believe Saturday morning on 10m (calling another station). All of the bands were so packed. Solar storm hit us and the polar paths closed pretty much entirely by mid Saturday. For CQ WW SSB the bands are so packed we inherently QRM each other.. This is why I now prefer CQ WW CW.. It's interesting to see how little activity there is on 20m on your side of the globe, 20m was jam packed here every 1-1.5 kHz. What sort of antenna were you using? Must be hard with all those static crashes from lightning.. 73 DE LB1TI / LC9A.
