What did you do to make the network game run more faster? I was trying this out with a friend and it felt unbearably slower than what I'm seeing from your videos.

We are playing a modded version of the game, not sure if that somehow affects it. The networking is also being done via a strange UDP pipe. I think the distance to your friend and the PC you're both running on has a great effect on the performance.

There's not quite enough buttons on the VR controllers to do everything, like spellcasting would be a pain to set up and use, but you could use the mouse "normally" within the screen by changing to "mouse-clicking"-mode from the "camera movement"-mode so you could technically do anything you would normally do in NWN, except for chat. Perhaps with some kind of speech-to-text functionality that could be done also.

How come you you didn't go after additional gold mines? Instead of researching elemental and then summoning wizards, you can do the units first so when the spell finishes you have gained magic while you wait.

The time it takes for the peons to gather gold from distant mines is really long and also puts the peons at risk of getting killed on the way by the enemy. It's much easier to go after the enemy's economy instead if they attempt that and cripple them with troops once they've lost economy because of the lost peons (they do cost gold to replace). For the wizards, yeah that's just bad playing. But this video is 7 years old and I was streaming and commentating on the game which takes a lot of concentration out of playing the game. :)

@@Yshxod yeah, mining from a distance does involve some risk but the tradeoff is you always have money to spend. I literally never stop training peasants so the distance doesn't matter much. I just space out my army from my town to the gold mine. Or depending on the terrain you can cut enemies off at bridges or use trees as a wall. I suppose in theory I could have mined all the gold on the map and I'm left with just peasants who can't fight back but it's never happened to me. Plus with summoners, running out of gold doesn't matter, you just wait til your magic replenishes. My main strategy is to use archers defensively early then send in waves of ultimate summons. I stop training everything but summoners and peasants to the point it looks ridiculous with like 20 peasants and 20 summoners in my town and nothing but summons and fire in my opponents town. Dunno if this helps or not but I've been able to play on gog.com on a modern computer.

Ah, man, this takes me back. First off, thanks for the upload. Secondly, a few observations/tips. You picked up on it kinda in the second match, but you can send peasants to scout. They train faster and if they get killed, oh well, they're cheap. The maps are usually mirrored. In the second match there was a gold mine to your right safe from your opponents troops. You put all your buildings on top of each other and your peasants kept getting stuck. Roads only cost like 50 gold, so space out your buildings. Both matches you waited way too long to harvest lumber. In the second one you had 10000 gold but couldn't do anything because you were waiting on like 500 lumber. Strangely in the second one it ended with you only having lumber. You play really aggressively. You send your guys far away instead of defending your town. Both matches you didn't even research shields. Also, humans greatest strength is healing so it pays to play defensively yet you never trained a healer. You both seemed to try and win with the ultimate summons. It works but they take a long, long time to summon. Plus you can just avoid them long enough they lose magic and die. Instead of swarming them, back away and use archers. Alternatively, you could use the lesser summons. They're cheaper and you get them quicker and more often. Send them in waves after your opponents peasants for maximum frustration.

Many of the maps are not very well mirrored and unbalanced. The ones we try to play are usually the ones that are a bit more balanced but there's still a lot of luck involved in getting just the right starting positions. Yeah, scouting is a good idea and I consistently do it with troops instead of peons out of a bad habit. :) I didn't notice the mine because of bad scouting and attention keeping. Yeah, none of us are very experienced in the game and we like to play aggressively since it feels more fun. I do like defending in later games we did, but then attacking once the enemy tide turns. I'm not a very good magic user and that shows for sure. Most of these games we are actually using a modified executable so some things might work out differently than with regular WC1. :)

We played the game through DOSBox (The latest version) and used the IPX functionality in it to get the multiplayer working. You do have to poke a hole in your firewall for the UDP port (which it tells what it is). Research dosbox wiki/tutorials to see how the IPX -> UDP works. Basically you need to start an IPX server before running the warcraft executable and have the other player connect to the same network through that by using your public IP address, then within the game you can just use the "IPX" option (no need to set any custom settings within the game for it to work)

I play Warcraft 2 ToD on my phone using Magic DosBox, no mouse nor keyboard because you can create your own controls on the emulator, runs really good and fast, can defeat AI (four corners, gold seperates from east to west and friends) and about to finish orc campaign. This is not a show off, but I wanna let you know that you can play warcraft 2 better with Magic Dosbox.

Yeah, VORPX for the visuals, some autohotkey scripts (a custom one to center cursor, NoMousy to get rid of mouse cursor on screen). Also later I added an autohotkey script that allows camera-based movement by pressing forward on the vive wand). I set hotkeys for NWN actions by using OpenVR2Key and for some actions that couldn't be done through that, I made my own additional program. For the 1st person mode, I required some server-side help to get rid of my head.

Using DOSBox with the included ipxnet utility. Also had to open firewall UDP port to allow another player to join the server. The games were played through the internet. You can call dosbox like DOSBox.exe <warcraftdir>\war.exe -c "ipxnet startserver <port> and the other player can join by calling DOSBox.exe <warcraftdir>\war.exe -c "ipxnet connect <port>". Also dosbox configuration needs to have ipx=true inside the [ipx] section. Hope that helps. :) Within the game you just use node 0 in the multiplayer section for both players one after the other and you're in.

Lol why don't you relax and wait for awhile? Skyrim, Borderlands 2 and lots of other VR games also premieered on psvr and later got a pcvr port. I'm actually hoping for it because perhaps they finally add 2 fully tracked hands, instead of just one for gamepad. PS4 gamepad is fully positionally tracked, but still a bit wonky. I wish they implement Moves too, then it'd play just like in NMS.

I'm really really hoping they will consider it. The VR market is growing all the time and I think it's a pretty nice fit for VR. No need for amazing accuracy with weapons and a lot of throwable/interactable objects to play around with for distractions. :)
