Much has been said by historians of Darwin's observations of the finches on the Galapagos islands while sailing on the Beagle, but little is mentioned of another incident Darwin had with some less fortunate birds on a different island during his voyage. We have three accounts of an excursion made by Darwin and the Captain from the Beagle to St. Paul's Rocks between the Cape Verde Islands and the coast of Brazil. First we shall read Darwin's version of the episode: " We found on St. Paul's only two kinds of birds-the booby and the noddy. The former is a species of Gannet, and the latter a tern. Both are of a tame and stupid disposition, and are so unaccustomed to visitors, that I could have killed any number of them with my geologic hammer." Browne mentioned the appalling incident in her biography of Darwin: " Uninhabited except for dense flocks of seafowl, and previously unvisited by any scientific recorder, they were an alluring target for a restless naval man and an eager friend . . . Darwin and Fitzroy had a marvelous time of it, whooping and killing birds with abandon". Browne, pp.204. See also the original, Narrative of the Surveying Voyage of H.M.S. Adventure and Beagle, Vol. 2:56. Fitzroy recorded the bloody scene in his personal narrative as well. According to him, one of the seamen asked if he could borrow Darwin's hammer to kill some of the birds with, to which Darwin replied, "No, no, you'll break the handle." Then, apparently struck by the novelty of this idea, Darwin himself picked up his hammer and began killing the peaceful birds in this manner, as Fitzroy related "away went the hammer, with all the force of his own right arm." There are thousands of evolutionist sites out there attempting to debunk the idea of Biblical Creation. Creationism must be anti science and only believed in by backwoods fundamentalist Christian hicks who hate science and are usually the snake handler kind who marry their first cousins. I'm curious though; if there is this vast, overwhelming amount of evidence for evolution, and it is an incontrovertible fact of science as much as the laws of voltage, current and resistance in electricity, then why do evolutionists feel so compelled to prove such an obvious occurrence if it is as plain as the nose on your face everywhere we go. I mean, people would not ordinarily go to such great lengths to prove that eggs exist, or that bark grows on trees or that grass is green, but you have this strange obsession to prove evolution, which is odd since wasn't it Darwin who supposedly proved it over 100 years ago? Why the rush to prove something over and over again and again and again if it's already staring you in the face? It's sort of like saying "I've just found out that cars in America travel on the right side of the road! And they use rubber wheels and have steering wheels to guide them." It just seems to be a bit of overkill, this redundant zeal to go about proving something that has already been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt. Is this much ado about nothing, or am I missing something here? Is Darwin's theory that humans descended from apes really some profound philosophic concept that takes years of deep thought and meditation to figure out, like a Buddhist monk contemplating a Zen koan? Or is the concept of evolution merely the rehashing of an old Epicurean philosophical, materialistic creation story; is the Origin of Species overrated; is it in essence a simple collection of Just So Stories and Aesop Fables that has been blown way out of proportion from it's actual value by it's adherents, while evolution has been enshrined as a sort of religious dogma. Darwin has reached the status of philosopher-sage among evolutionists; he is the only figure in modern history besides the Pope among Catholics and Joseph Smith among Mormons who's decrees and pronouncements are not to be questioned (especially by those pesky, science hating Creationists); Darwin is above any peer review, while his Origin is regarded as sacred script; as infallible among evolutionists as the King James Bible is to Fundamentalists. But, then again, what do I know? What are the striking aspects of Darwin's theory that impresses people so much? I must be the simplest among simpletons not to have grasped the obvious and profound, amazing and historical revelations of Darwin's history changing work.

What influence did Galapagos ' very strange flora and fauna have on Darwins' thinking? Did it HINDER or HELP his enquiries? Just a thought from someone who has a basic amateur understanding of genetics.
