That’s your timbre or tone color which is just “how our voice sounds” which is separate from note/pitch range - what makes you sound like you essentially - otherwise all people with the same range would sound exactly the same and we wouldn’t be able to tell who was singing without it seeing them. But each of us has wildly different shapes in our sinuses and body which change the tone or timbre of our voice. We can also call that tone color as well.

For me this is not an easy song to cover and the thing I love the most about this cover is that I believed her just as much as Delores. I felt like she connected with the lyrics and felt them which is so absolutely necessary for zombie.

I mean I’m your living example, I’ve been false cording almost every day for the last 25 years with zero vocal damage. So if you are going hoarse something is wrong with the technique. Also look at Angela Gossow, Corpesgrinder and many many more people who false cord for decades. False cord is very safe but the caveat is it must be done correctly. Try my false cord series and see if it helps change the way you make the sound!

I'm finding the more I listen to it the better it sounds to me like the familiarization process to a new song or album (it takes a few listens to "understand it" logically and emotionally) - even though it's still bad, it's weird. As if I'm seeing the positive notes of what she was trying to achieve more. It still makes me giggle in parts though. Her performance is prob a vocal coaches' dream, and I expect to see many more of these videos in the future.

I’m 15 years old, my lowest is a B2 and my highest is a C#6 (not a belt) I’ve been told I can fall into the contralto territory but I’ve also been told my voice is too “bright” for it 😢
@voicehacks
@voicehacks 9 күн бұрын
This is probably going to be contralto when you get older and for now at 15 probably mezzo will fit well but definitely this was me and It settled into contralto in adulthood. Timbre will also darken later but I really disagree with coaches who classify people by tone color and not voice range because regardless of how bright or dark your vocal tone is, your range is what it is and your cords are what they are and the belt break will still be in the same spot. So having a contralto note range and calling ourselves a mezzo won’t help much because timbre isn’t going to change where my belt break is. Except because you are young so Mezzo may temporarily feel comfortable. If you get older and it settles upwards (which can happen) then it’s mezzo. But my voice is technically a little bright compared to the other contraltos out there but it doesn’t matter because I still need to move the keys of songs to fit my contralto belt break my tone won’t change much in regard to that so range over tone

Another thing I suspect she was wrestling with was a live autotune. I watched another video where this performance was piped through some pitch monitoring software and it was trying to snap the performance to the lines. But yeah, aside from being drunk, I think the other thing messing her up was singing unaccompanied so that she didn't have another note to reference and if you start to deviate from your initial scale, you will find that you may start snapping to weird lines later on in the song. In addition, she seemed to take liberties with the melody where she takes it up the scale rather than down the scale or vice versa at times. Not sure how intentional this was or if she was just drunk to the point of not knowing which part of the song she was singing. The ultimate performance is from The Naked Gun though.

I can reach G2, but I sang as a soprano in a professional choir for years. In fact, I didn't discover my chest voice till my 40s. I thought I could only sing from E4 to E6. I couldn't sing pop songs bec my head voice only went down to E4. After, I worked with a pop singing coach, I discovered my chest voice and she thought that I might be a contralto. I don't know. I've since developed a mix voice and can sing below E4 but I feel that I sound like a mezzo like Adele not Karen Carpenter. I sound like a man around C3 region. But it requires a noticeable switch in voice. Still working on smoothing out my range and sounding less manly in the lower range and more dark in the C4 to C5 range. I've finally developed power and ease in that C4 to C5 range but I still cannot siren without a hump. If I siren from low notes, I flip at E4. If I siren from high notes, I flip at A3/B3. Am I mezzo or contralto? In my head voice, I definitely sound like a soprano not a mezzo as my voice is clear and bright and loud. More importantly, how do I connect the chest and head voice smoothly? It's easy for me to sing Celine Dion songs. Harder to sing Adele songs because her songs sit in my passagio. I can sing the low notes of Karen Carpenter songs comfortably but I struggle to stay in chest voice for the whole song, usually have to shift to a mix or head voice for the higher notes. I'm confused.

It sounds like you might fit into one of the exceptions which is a good thing but a little harder to navigate. It sounds like you have a wider range than normal kind of like a Mariah Carey who could actually sing really low as well. But there is no way in hell I would call her a contralto or mezzo - she’d be an exception which does happen like any other body part it can be exceptionally shaped cords that give us a closer to 4 octave overall range. For this stuff disregard how your timbre/tone sounds compared to some of the other people because you would be an exception but also tone and timbre don’t really change where our belt breaks are. It sounds like you’re a wide range singer with contralto. and mezzo capabilities but probably with a mezzo belt break rather than contralto. I also sang soprano in high school (due to shortage of people maybe? hahaha) but I can’t go anywhere near notes above C6. So I don’t fit into any exceptions. This may mean that you also need to be more flexible with changing the key of songs to fit your break rather than other people’s breaks. Hope that helps!

@@voicehacks Thanks! So transposing the song to what's comfortable is all that's important. My head voice is so developed that I have more usable notes in that register. My voice teacher asked me to stop or reduce singing in my head voice so that it will be easier to strengthen my chest voice. I don't know if it's age (I'm 56) or the practice but I think I lost some notes off the top of my range. When I was most active in the choir, I could reach the G6 consistently, and sometimes the B6 (after a lot of warm up). So I'm back to singing the highest notes alongside my lowest notes to maintain my range. Thanks for your reply and your video!

I’m actually highly curious because I used to be a soprano/mezzo-soprano range. However, after contracting the C-19 in 2021, I lost at least .5- almost 1 full part of an octave (my highest portion of my range). I have found singing down in the lower parts of Mezzo and upper portions of contralto feels much more comfortable now.

check out SLOAN's analysis and about 28:00, he did side to side comparison on Complicated and you will see how her voice was looser but muddy in early days, but then grown tighter and clearer recently. which is a reverse engineering in nature that's highly unlikely to happen unless it's simply a different person. I'm gonna vote for it being a double and let Avril stay in my memories

Yes! Great example! I believe he had had his vocal cords measured and they are longer than typical - which would make sense from a string/pitch physics standpoint. What’s crazy is, someone could be an accountant and have an exceptionally unique set of cords but if they don’t care to sing or push the limits of their voice, they may never know about it. I suppose it’s the same thing where not every tall person cares about playing basketball. 😆

This is really helpful. Back in music conservatory I was (mis)classified as a lyric coluratura but now believe I have always been more of a mezzo soprano. I have a naturally deeper speaking voice and actually wondered at one point if I could be a contralto because I can sing down to Bflat2. Upper range to F6, when I was younger it was A6 but we're talking whistle tones... I now (mix)belt up to Aflat5 on a good day, but prefer not to belt higher than F5. After listening to your video, I think my range/tessitura is closest to a mezzo soprano.
