That is an excellent spoon…. I was sitting in my backyard next to the wood stove under a lean-to type pagoda shelter, drinking tea and playing chess with my neighbour. I had built the shelter myself, I had carved the chess set by hand and also carved to spoons we were using to stir our tea by hand as well. He looked up at the roof of the shelter, down at the chess set, then looked at the spoons and said, “If we dropped you in a forest with nothing but a saw, an axe and a knife…. you could making everything you would need couldn’t you” To which I replied, “that’s the whole idea” The creative act of making something is the very thing that elevates us up to a higher level. Anyone can be a consumer, if you want to feel good about yourself become a creator.

Ryobi 14inch 40V cordless. Looks like it’s around $300 with 4Ah battery right now.

@frozen_toes_ak Kolrosing is a lot of fun. Laying out the grid with pencil is the hardest part, I think. That, and knowing that mistakes can't be corrected, and an over-cut of half a millimeter will be an eyesore. hah I just try to put that part out of my mind.

Excellent work. 👍👍👍 Word of warning to anyone doing the same.. *Don’t use ‘Kiln Dried Wood’.* During the forced drying process the wood develops internal cracks and splits inside that you cannot see, you get 3/4 of the way through your carving project and suddenly come across the internal cracks as you carve, [I’ve done this and ended up with spoons where I have had to fill the cracks up with resin glue or even abandon the project. Extremely annoying.

Btw, this birch log was felled by my neighbor last summer. I meant to carve it while it was still green but didn’t get around to it until recently. Didn’t want to waste the piece so I attempted it anyway. I’m glad it didn’t crack during the process. I agree, that would be really annoying!

@@frozen_toes_ak NO, I don't carve. Have attended many woodworking shows and have NEVER seen a carver who didn't use one. Several taught classes and unless people taking classes had one I was told they would not be allowed in class. Believe it or not. Good luck.
