This brought back memories for me, my Father was RSM in the Scots Guards based in the Guards Depot in Caterham,we also lived there and as a child we were allowed to use the swimming Pool in the depot , my parents were married in the Guards chapel, The depot closed down and was moved to Pirbright And the last time I went to Caterham I went to see where the depot was and it’s now a Tesco,s and a car park ! !

l served for 3 years from september 1958 caterham pirbright lydd then the best part of my life in the second btl started troop ship Dunera took us to Kenya fantastic voyage the med suez cannal red sea indian ocean Mombasa steam train 300 miles to niarobi then wagon 70 miles to our camp at Gil Gil six man tents for everybody the troubles were over two years there our leave was spent at mombasa you could not go home them days mombasa wow thats another story one company was sent to Bahrain where i finished my servise while there we were sent into Kuwiat on operation vantage never seen a red coat what a great part of my life N S signed on the exstra year

What type of MEDIA was used back in the 1950's/60's?. The colours are always SO RICH AND VIBRANT!.I presume some type of film rather than Video?.

Why are the boys made to sit up on the narrow tables cross legged one in front of each other like that, could they not afford chairs, that must have been uncomfortable and humiliating the hoo ray Henry officers would never have dreamt of demeaning themselves like that so why make the boys do it, to treat them like sub humans I suppose so they knew their place wasn't as equal as them.

Parade dress looks much better with the Lee-Enfield.

i was a junior guardsman in pirbright 1973 . chesea 74 , caterham 75 to 77 . berlin 77. welsh guards .

I served in the Coldstream Guards 1963 to 66, did the Ceremonial duties and the Aden/Radfan campaign 1964/65. The Regiment has fought and won battles since it’s formation in 1650, don’t believe sarcastic comments from guys who probably weren’t tough enough to take the discipline. Regimental Motto, Nulli Secundus.

My Dad was in Malaya with the 3rd Bn..

My dad was a Grenadier, he took me to Pirbright in 1969, to join the Juniors, they were oh so very nice to me, but I wasn’t fooled. I ended up in the Army 4 years later.

I served 3 years in Coldstream Guards 74 to 77 Chelsea barracks , Wavel Barracks Berlin , 2 tours of N Ireland . Loved every minute of it would go back now if they would let an 64 year old man !!

i joined welsh guards 9 years later . totally different camp . all new blocks .

A better vanished time..

The recruiting film shows a different picture to the reality. Endless drill and bulling of boots was the norm not enjoying yourself in the sun. All lies to get young lads to enlist.

Bet ye stull remember yer army number, Pirbright in early 60s had too much bullying and abuse by officers and l/sgts to young soldiers, and wages were less than the dole, what it did for me was to hate many English people with ther posh accents,and their hatred of the Scots and Irish,because we wouldn't speak laddy da English.. Poch mahon,Saor alba gu brah..Watch the dvd THE HILL with sean connery was based on the hill behind the gym,and many Sgts in the guards.

I was there in 1960, and this takes me back. I recognise the Company Commander, Major Phillipson, or “ sticky” to us. The yearly camp on the IOW was actually on the site of a Warner’s holiday camp, and we worked clearing areas fir future use.

Just been told one of pals joined after I left he was drummer in local pipe band and joined SG juniors to start 9 year then 22 and retired a RSM Campbell first name Malcom anyone know him..
