Fabulous that you got to try one, i never have. Would have been interesting to try a tiny bit of the unripe fruit, i believe its not poisonous but contains oxalins that taste like flakes of glass ? You are studying at an amazing facility

Very cool, Blayne! I wonder how they got established there? Maybe someone planted one tree years ago and it's started spreading by seed? Or maybe a bird dispersed some seeds there at some point 🤔

They grow in the Whitsunday region of tropical north Queensland (Aus.) which often gets as low as 50 degrees F or lower for short periods during the winter but warm during the day. The trick in winter in a wet and dry tropical climate ( they are native to a wet equatorial climate) is to plant them in a well protected place sheltered from any potential cold dry winds but open to warm winter sun , heavily mulch them to keep the root base warm , water them with warm water mixed with liguid potash and if a cool snap is forecast it is recommended to spray the fronds with a fungicide as cool weather can bring out a brown spot fungus that can lead to their demise. (PS. This winter in north Queensland has been an unusually cold one , so I hope the Lipstick palms recover ok😮)
