Ahem, Edgar … I believe your perspective on things is a bit biased. You wish to hear less “sound” or “ambience” but truth is, there’s literally no difference (none that human ears could perceive) and there is absolutely no logical reason as to why there should be an audible difference. Yes, a player used to playing a single violin would perhaps be able to feel a slight weight imbalance which could (though, unlikely) cause the musician to play differently. And yes, that musician may agree that they perceived a difference. This, however, does not pertain to your experiments since the exact opposite would also be true. So, sorry, no … the scroll can go … if you want it to.

The Carbon Fiber Bridge was less prone to producing harsh, screeching tones, but was a bit muted, and resulted in a lower volume. "Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) can look similar in shape and size to asbestos fibers, which has raised concerns about possible health effects. CNTs have a fibrous needle-like shape, a high surface-to-volume ratio, and can persist in lung tissue. Inhaling CNTs could potentially cause conditions similar to asbestosis, so people working with them should take precautions."

Grazie dell’informazione! Ringrazio anticipatamente 😊

I didn't hear much difference. Perhaps the trebles were a little smoother and sweeter sounding with the Titaniun. 🤷

Hi Vladimir! Actually it doesn’t influence the sound; but it makes the bridge last much longer! Hope that helps! All the best

What do you think abiut carbon-fiber adjustable soundposts?
@EdgarRuss2 күн бұрын
Well you know everything can be made better! But somehow our human ear has been used to wooden made sound. I say that because as soon we ue Carbon fiber most of the time the result becomes so efficient that the sound becomes too focused and appears to our ear hard and unpleasant. Sayed that it could be that. Too soft sounding instrument with the help of a carbon fiber made sound post becomes perfect and another instrument becomes too harsh! You have to try! The biggest problem is to stay diplomatic and objective! Edgar

@@EdgarRuss very interesting! I imagine that the perfect adjust that they are suppousefbto offer can help a los with soft-sound violines. Can be the answer to them and maybe also for 5-6 strings violines that packs in response of the low strings.

Hi Edgar, thank you for the very interesting video. When I buy violins I use the MAG-ic Probe to measure plate thicknesses. That product works great when connected to a computer or smartphone to measure the plate thickness and thickness gradient. While I have yet been able to correlate plate thickness to sound quality, the thinner the plates, the greater the sound volume and projection. There is still a lot of art creating a great instrument.

I’m glad you talk about new vs antique instruments. As good as the old masters were, I find it hard to believe with all of our modern technology we can’s make anything as good as what was made hundreds of years ago. I don’t believe it.

The bridge position relative to the inner nicks is lined up with the Back Edge nearest the player . In the Australian maker site he lines up the nicks with the Middle of the bridge ,not the back edge . That is then related to the soundpost position .

Titanium! You need a titanium scroll, or at least a titanium screw to re-attach the wood. Haha. Seriously, I didn't think it was so bad.

It's sacriledge, I know, but every fiddle I've made is scroll free! My strategy is unusual: make a weird fiddle and sell it in a case such that it will spend decades and centuries largely unplayed and therefore remain undamaged ; )

Another excellent video, I love it!! I wonder if you would be interested in sharing your expertise on the practical comparison between the traditional hide glue to the contemporary super glue? I've recently listened to a violin whose plates were glued with super glue and the sound was extremely bright, with a very peculiar quality to it. Venturing a bit further in the Speculation Realm, considering that mastering the hide glue may be considerably challenging (with all the temperature demands, quality of the available grains, etc.) would it be possible that there could be some correlation between poor glueing and poor sound (thus explaining why super glue, which is arguably easier to work with) improves so much the sound?

How would you compare this to the Wittner hill style fine tuner? I have one of those on one of my violins and am thinking of putting one on my good instrument, but might think about investing in one of these titanium ones.

Tbat would be the next thing to try. Instead of cutting the scroll off, make a violin without the scroll on it. Would the better quality of wood make a difference? What about the design without the scroll? Would that make a difference? Removing the scroll is one thing. Building an instrument without is another. That would be interesting to compare: A scrolled violin made the same as the non-scrolled violin. Great video, by the way.
