I've read that there are "permanent" versions of Parker Quink inks called "Super Quink", however I haven't seen any modern Parker ink box/bottle with such a name ("Super Quink") written on it so far, but just "Quink". How to differentiate the "Super Quink" (permanent ink) bottles from the standard "Quink" (non-permanent ink) ones? Or is it the same ink that some people call it "Super Quink" when in fact it is just "Quink"? Maybe they refer it to as "Super Quink" when there's no legend "washable" written on the box/bottle (black, blue-black) and as "Quink" when there's the legend "washable" written on the box/bottle (blue)? It's just so confusing!

Been a fan of Sheaffer Skrip ever since my first bottle of blue-black in around 1983. And of the inkwell bottle since the same time. I've recently found a purple ink, same name as the ink Nick Stewart came out with a while back, but the brand, not ink name. It was sold for writing checks, and purportedly as permanent as the Warden inks from Noodler's (maybe not laser resistant. 😁) And even changes color when tampered with. Have you ever come across anything like this? It seems possibly 1940s or 50s, based on the lettering on the bottle.

It's your fault. 😁 I've started getting and using more vintage fountain pen inks since discovering your blogs. On my fixed disability income, they can be as reasonable in price to some modern inks, and they seem to "play nice" with more types of paper than many today. Been a couple of years. When are other vintage inks going to be showcased?

I grew up in the sixties and seventies and until my senior year in high school, cartridge pens (usually Sheaffer) were the standard. Funny thing is, I can remember in junior high that my Spanish teacher used to keep a quart of Skrip in her cabinet, and for a penny any of the students could use a provided syringe to refill their cartridges. Can't see any teacher doing that now!

Hérbin (in France) recently made larger bottles of ink with vintage labels, and the caps sealed by dipping them in wax. They were sold in gift sets with a little ceramic ink-cup, like the ones used in the desks in French schools, back when violet ink was the standard (because it used the cheapest dye). You might find vintage French master inks in wine bottles. These were used during WWI and WWII, when new bottles were scarce.

Sheaffer's Skrip had tiny samples too, but I've never seen one. According to a vintage print ad that had an illustration of the tiny bottle, Sheaffer's had exhibit trucks that travelled the country. People were encouraged to visit the trucks to see how Sheaffer's pens and inks were made, and to have their Sheaffer's pens cleaned and repaired. And everyone who visited would be given a little sample of Skrip.

As stated, brown-label Skrip dates from the late 1930s. Fun Fact: A bottle is on the family's desk in "A Christmas Story", set in 1940. I love that attention to detail. Unlike the movie "Annie", set in 1933, in which Miss Hannigan kept her bathtub gin in modern Skrip master ink bottles.

The earliest version was a disaster. Sheaffer had widely tested it, by having its employees use it in their own pens. It was indeed clog-proof. But those employees had only ever used Sheaffer in their pens. When the ink was put on the market, it clogged people's pens terribly, because they'd used various brands of ink before trying Skrip, and people didn't flush their pens before changing inks. When the Prussian Blue dye in the Skrip touched the residue of a different brand of ink, it formed serious clogs. Sheaffer withdrew the product, and reformulated it.

Thanks John. I've got a conundrum after watching this. I really need/want to make an ink journal so I have a nice overview of my ever expanding ink collection. Now that Tomoe River is being discontinued, I don't want to "waste" any of my precious TR notebooks on making an ink journal. But if make the journal with any other paper, it won't display the inks in all their glory. Decisions, decisions. First worlds problems, really. :)
@FountainPenLove
@FountainPenLove 2 жыл бұрын
That is a bit of a conundrum, but I have a suggestion. If I were starting an ink journal right now, I'd make it on paper that I will likely be using for the majority of the time. This way, you'll know how the ink will look when you use it. It's definitely a first world problem, but also something that's good to think about before diving in. Hopefully you come up with a solution that works for you!

@@FountainPenLove Thanks John. I actually decided to go with Tomoe River after all. I did a test on 52 gsm, since that is the paper I use the most, but I got too much bleed-through on the swatches, so I ended up using a 68 gsm notebook. It really brings out the best in my inks, so I'm happy I chose that notebook in the end.

I’ve always found bottles of skrip ink, but they always solidify into a putty like substance. Every bottle I’ve encountered is like this, do you know why this happens?
@FountainPenLove
@FountainPenLove 2 жыл бұрын
The cap seals don't always stand up over time and the liquid evaporates, leaving the dye behind. I'm not sure why some turn to a solid, putty-like substance and others turn to dust.

I was happy to see the box for the Micro Film ink, I have a near full bottle and now I know what to look for in a box, also I have one of the 16 Oz bottles in a fair box.
