I’ve been using a 2014 MacMini as a daily driver for about 4 years now. (My other is a 2015 12: Retina MacBook) Both are currently running macOS 14.5 (via OCLP) the Mini acts as my Plex media server, while my MacBook is what I use for “gathering media files”. While there are occasional hiccups running an officially unsupported OS, they have been working surprisingly well. Wondering if I can still use macOS 15 when OCLP gets updated. When I get an M-series Mac, I’ll switch one of these two over to Linux (probably elementaryOS) as a test to see if they can continue operating in those capacities with the new OS.

Thanks. I’m thinking about getting a mini for a file and media server. I’m surprised that you’re daily driving a 12 inch tho. Hope u can get any m chip MacBook. They’re the best laptops I’ve ever had

Hé had the Fusion Drive. Probably that was why this performed so bad. I have one with an SSD and it’s fine for the not really advanced stuff (like, why would you even expect a machine that cheap/old to render 4K etc). But for web browsing. Office stuff. And even some music production it’s absolutely fine. Same goes for photo editing btw.

The Model I had of was an Intel core i5 with a 2 core, 4 Thread 2.8ghz processor, Intel iris graphics and a 1TB Fusion Drive, it was the second best model available.

I am sure that the other version would not work well either. I am not a app or music developer, as you know I am a KZfaqr, video editing is very different from web browsing and music development, photo editing is in the middle of these things and when I tried that it would crash more often the video editing.

I was plaaning to get one of those. It has the same spec as yours. I wanna know if how it performs on daily tasks like surfing the web. Using Xcode and listening to apple music at the same time.
