My GFB Outdoor Hatchet chipped three strikes into splitting kindling. I think it was the same thing you experienced. I reground the whole thing and it’s been so much better ever since! The edge holds much longer and I’m getting better results after the reprofile.

Seems like a nice functional design considering the shape of the head. I have always wanted to try carving my own handle. I have a nice piece of hickory and the design drawn, now I just have to build up the nerve to do it.

I know I read somewhere that using oak directly in contact with steel will promote rust due to the tannic acid in oak. I think that was more applicable to knife scales, though. I still made a knife with oak scales several years ago, and haven't noticed any rust issues (the steel was from a broken leaf spring, so probably 5160). I always enjoy your content, and would probably buy some of your handle treatment as long as it isn't crazy expensive.

Great video! Ontario Knife Company deserved better. The “fillet knife” you reference is actually a boning knife. A positive suggestion; Learn to not say “um” so often. You use it every time you pause. With practice, you could stop using it completely. Your videos would greatly benefit from this. Regards, RW

Two of the better known German axe manufacturers both use C60 (1060) steel in their heads: Ochsenkopf (Ox Head) and Adler. Ox head is the oldest operating axe forge in Germany (since 1781) and Adler has been around since 1919) and both are widely considered premium level axes at far less-than-premium prices. Both have a variety of head shapes, weights and handle lengths from crafting hatchets to large full length splitters. I’m personally hoping to pick up an Adler Canoe Axe for camping/kayaking.

I agree, I like German stuff. I own about 20 Stihl saws and love Stihl chainsaws. I know that Germans tend to over complicate the obvious. I do not like the design of Stihl hand tools. I have a GBA Small Forest axe, Scandinavian Forest Axe and Wildlife Hatchet. Don’t worry about packing junk - Amazon will load it up. Now, I Know why I have so many pocket knives - to unpack stuff from Amazon or eBay.

It is way more dense and practically indestructible. That’s why Hickory has been the choice for Axes and some tools for 2 centuries. Best!

I got one of these axes. I did not have a long felling axe. I refinished the handle with linseed oil. I have four coats on it now, heading towards six. I still head, but I like red axes because they are easy to find in the leaves. have to make a sheath for it. When all of this is complete I will sharpen and use it. I have aCT boys axe, which I use as a wedge banger for my felling wedges. I did not pull the head from the new 36 inch axe. When I break the handle I may strip the red paint from the head, but I like the red paint, because they are easy to find in the leaves when I throw them down when not in use.

To quote Clint Eastwood, "There's nothing like a nice piece of hickory". That said, Ash is a native and abundant wood in the UK and I expect its been used here since antiquity. And I know it's sacralige but it would have interesting to see the figures of a fibreglass handle in that comparison!

There's absolutely no reason that comes to mind why an axe or knife company would need to be so vague about the steel they use. Unless it's their own, carefully guarded formula, and it produces a steel that is significantly more durable than what most other companies are using. That's obviously not the case with Granfors or Hults, but it seems they want to be vague about it just for spite.
@danielcarter5537

I watched another KZfaq channel recently and he did a comparison of three premium brand axes of similar size and weight. One was a Granfors Bruk, 2nd was Hardcore Hammers and the third was a Council Tool velvicut. He looked at things like the quality of steel used, the fit & and finish, and the performance. The Council tool axe came out on top. During his comparison he noted that Granfors Bruk uses recycled high carbon steel in forging the heads. Which is a nice way of saying that it's a mystery steel. If the blacksmith doesn't know exactly what steel they are working with, then it's impossible to get a consistent heat treatment everytime. Council tool and Hardcore Hammers both use known steels. Hardcore Hammers only failed in the fit and finish, because the grain orientation was way off and the wedges in the eye were sloppy. I think the problem with yours is the mystery steel. It remains too soft to hold an edge for long, because they dont know the optimal temperature to heat treat it at.

I have two CT axes and I like both of them. I have three GB axes and I like them, too. I have a half dozen True Temper axes that I have owned 40-50 years. I do not have a Jersey pattern axe. My bigger axes are Dayton patterns. Even my TT Boys axe is a Dayton pattern. I just got a new CT Dayton pattern. I am finishing the handle, now, with Linsheen, so it will be about a month before I use it. Any oil based finish takes 28 days to completely harden. Anyone who says differently is full of crap. I never use an axe until the finish has completely dried. My new Dayton will get an easy half dozen coats of Linsheen before I use it.

The bend of the handle is supposed to go the other way of the flat side of the axe, that way your hands will have clearance from the wood you're hewing. The only reason you're not having that issue is because you haven't tried hewing a very wide piece.
@urbanlumberjack
@urbanlumberjack Ай бұрын
I make all my handles this way. It’s easier to track plumb and more comfortable. The broad axes I use most often have an offset and cupped head so contact with the log is very unlikely or impossible.

Great video man. I’d be interested to know how you get wood in your area. Big rounds like this are rare in the suburbs I live in but my eyes are always peeled for tree trimmers. Not having a forest that I can legally cut down from also adds to the difficulties, but when I get a score boy is it great!

"Council Tool is the only company I'm aware of that uses a higher grade of steel in their premium axe line (Woodcraft and Velvicut) that justify the price increase." Exactly. That, and they still keep the margin tight considering how much time and effort their staff puts into getting that hang and bit just right for you. That's a lot right there. (Then again, if you plan to customize your ax *at all*, why in the world would you buy a Velicut *except* maybe for the difference in steel? And do you need that little bit of difference? The Sports Utility line is right in the Goldilocks zone. Hard and durable enough; still easy to maintain the edge. Otherwords, not too hard, not too soft: Goldilocks!
