Nothing ever happened to me but this story really hit deep for me because when I arrived there I rented a nice hotel and had a "friend" and she invited her 4 friends ands and when I left the room for second and went back I caught the girls trying to steal from me.... while they stole mostly food... after being there for a while I realized how lucky I was to even be alive... those girls were amateurs the professionals will scope you and bring guys with guns

Wow, these stories are so intense and insane! Definitely reconsidering wanting to visit Colombia and it's a shame because I am from next-door. I am from Panama. Maybe it's not so dangerous for a Panamanian to visit Colombia since we are familiarized with their culture since we were part of Colombia once upon a time before the canal was made. Some people need to understand is that dating in Colombia can be a little bit sketchy because Colombian women are very loyal to Colombian men. and what I mean by that is that throughout Latino culture men are machos for the most part however in Colombia in particular, you had some big drug dealing druglords that were so powerful and dominant in Colombian culture. And the biggest fan of Colombian is a Colombian. That is why I figured that all of this influx of passport bros going to Colombia was going to cause problems especially with the men, because Colombian women, even though I have known them and I know maybe a couple that have dated out of their own nationality, they are very loyal to men. And what ends up happening is that these groups of people begin to get very intelligent with their tactics. some of them might not do it right away, but they might have a plan throughout the whole time that they've been with you and a couple of months or even weeks. That's when they start to take action.. It is very sad because it's a country that is beautiful and have the opportunity to really bring more people into going and visit but all of the stuff is making people go to other countries near Colombia. unfortunately this is one of the main reasons why Panama never opened a highway through the Darien gap to go into Colombia, to have more control on who comes in and out. Many Colombians have even moved to Panama because it's peaceful in Panama and it's very safe compared to Colombia. It's like a tropical Miami with rainforest and beaches nearby on both sides of the coast.

All these Colombia drugging/robbing stories have something in common, a bright-eyed Western tourist who tries to live as if he's in his home country, able to call up an uber, rent an air b'n'b or meet sexual hookups on dating apps, and using a phone banking app. All of these things are possible to do out there, so the 'digital nomad' does them, unaware that none of these things are really the norm at all, so that with a high percentage of well-heeled tourists being among these people, consequently that makes all these things inherently unsafe, magnets for the clever, opportunistic criminal. I can understand so many men falling for the charms of Colombian women, as they can be quite fantastic, but if you want a girlfriend then chat up a shop girl or join a church, and if you just want a jump the actual professionals at well-known clubs and houses in every city and town ply their trade for the most part honestly, and very economically too. For all tourists, Colombia is best appreciated in the daytime. If I go out in the evening in Santa Marta I dress down, carry no more than $30, and leave my phone in the hotel. I'm an Englishman with very basic Spanish, 7 or 8 trips to Colombia totalling about 2 years, and nothing bad has ever happened to me there (so far, touch wood). I must say I admire the cheerfulness of this KZfaqr, he has a great attitude, and it'd be a shame if this experience really did deter him from returning. I've been all over the world and never come across a country with so much soul.

Im currently in Colombia as we speak visiting my girlfriend (who’s mother use to take care of me in Venezuela when I was a baby) and I’ll tell you this when Americans come down here and look for girls on dating apps or going to clubs your putting your self in danger. I wouldn’t advise any Americans to date anyone from here. It’s too dangerous. The only reason I did it is because I grew up with my girlfriend‘s aunt in Philadelphia and her mom and my mom were good friends in Venezuela.

I am Colombian but live abroad in UAE, I am always in shocked when travelers tell others that going to Colombia is very safe. "No, it is not", because nothing happened to them it does not mean it is safe. I am always very nervous when I traveled there with my children, I try not to go out after 6 pm in Bogota.
