Strong fella. That was a big concrete thingy inside. Overkill hole. Now you need lots of concrete to do new. 😮

If you put the brick on the other side, you could then step on the end of the long 4x4 to use it as a lever arm to lift the cement block further, avoiding a back injury. Pouring a little water in the hole will also help to soften the surrounding dirt.

Wrap the chain around the 4x4 then put the jack under the 4x4 end and simply jack it up. use leverage. Little to no digging needed.

A better way, stand the old post, or the new one vertically, wrap a chain or strap over the top, tie around the top end of the post, trapping the strap or chain with the post tipped somewhat past the hole. Then, pull back across the hole and the lever effect (huge) will pull the concrete up and out of the hole. Have a 2x4 wedge or gravel next tot he hole to hold it in place if the first try is not sufficient. Then, Take a new bite over the top of the post and repeat. A whole lot less complicated, easier and quicker.

No mechanical advantage using leverage. Loop the chain over the cross beam, 1/3 from the the first end, and then jack up the beam from the opposite end. Physics can be your friend.
@perrymdp
@perrymdp 4 жыл бұрын
Would work for a few inches then the jack would slip out because the cross beam would no longer be level to the jack.

Attach the chain to the post, then lift the post with the jack. Or put the end of the post on a board right at the edge of the hole, then attach the chain to the post, then lift the far end of the post. You can attach the chain to the post by drilling a hole that it will pass thru, then passing a rebar or large bolt thru the chain. Or pull it right out with a car if you can.

A wood fence post will just come out of the concrete if you jack the post up. You will still have to remove the concrete as a separate operation.

Great effort and thank you well deserved for showing how this can be done, only thing is that it may not be as easy for most people to lift the weight of the 4x4 with the concrete.

Build a tall fulcrum near the post. Then, set the lever on the fulcrum with just enough over the post to catch the chain from the post. Pull down on the other end of the lever to lift the post with minimum effort,

Great idea to use scissor jack with chain- But way too much add'l labor digging and readjusting & chaining lower concrete body. You should have just spanned the hole by @ 4' Blocked it 18" high and just plated into old post w (4) 1/2 x 5 hex wood screws Put chain though/under plate before screwing in the 4 screws. w ratchet Use drill to drive and pilot but only w 5/16" drill- not too loose. If you have a hollow concrete you have to use a wedge inside by putting cable/rod in hole with ball/wedge nut & 2 2x4s which have been angle cut at bottom and spread against walls when you lift rod/cable. Of course you have pre drilled a 1/2 hole to ascend through.

If the 4x4 was the cross beam for a small saw horse at maybe 3' your idea would work better, also cut the metal driving bar to about 6 to 8 inchrs, and attach your battery drill.

I am going to be honest at first I was thinking "Why not just rip the damn thing out of the hole and save a few minutes?". Then the end came and the load was a lot larger than appeared. This process took almost 8 minutes with video editing. This was a good way to solve the problem especially your at an older age and your on your own it seems. I rely on myself a lot so I can appreciate this. Thanks for the video. P.S. Upgrade "Modify" this jack so you can use a drill attachment. It would ease things up on the back.

Hey, nice trick Steven. Thanks for sharing. Why not place the jack under the wood on one side and crank it up like a lever, pulling the concrete up... that would save you lots of rounds back and forth... just a thought.

When he had the concrete Jacked up tight to the bottom of his 4x4 why didn't he just grab the long side of the 4x4 and pick it right out.Lever????

Hmm. Basic principle of how a lever works would be useful. Ie put the leverage point closer to the hole
@SaltySugar

Arduous Andotherous If he had done that there might be a chance the lever point would sink in because of dirt crumbling due to weight. I would guess.

Well, like I said in another video: works great where he is but here in Canada, we are required to have four feet of concrete. While this method may work in theory, I would think it would take a really long time!
