Thanks for sharing the lovely pattern and the efficient way to make it with strips. I too have trouble piecing two quilts at the same time. There are other advantages to leaders and enders (or thread bunnies as Kate from The Last Homely House calls them) that you didn't mention. Similar to chain piecing, a "bunny" keeps the needle from coming unthreaded and it keeps tension on the thread so the thread doesn't nest in the slot of the machine. Even when I have a 4" of thread loose the darn needle comes unthreaded. Especially my older machine. Keep up the great teachings!

I’m happier working on one project then switching to another. Although I may work on 3 or 4 each week. Too much thinking and planning to do leaders and enders. I’ll use a “bunny” if my machine is eating fabric. But the single hole needle plate often fixes that problem.

I use Leaders & Enders as it makes sewing easier - sometimes my machine eats the thread at the beginning of sewing - it also makes your stitching neater, because you don’t get the thread nest when you start to stitch!

I wonder how it would look to use 2.5 inch strips of print with 1.5 of white? Maybe I should try that!

I not sure if you can help me. I'm a self taught quilter. In the past few years I have ordered quilt patterns and not sure what I was thinking but they have 45 and 60 degree cuts. For some reason I can't wrap my head around them. It would be greatly appreciated if you could do a tutorial on them without having to buy special rulers.

I have never used a FAT QUARTER BUNDLE. Or any precut. It sounds like fun. I think it is cool that you were inspired by another KZfaqr being inspired. I look forward to seeing your completed quilt.

Leaders and enders? No! Adaptation? Resounding yes! I do production sewing (not for a living but in my sewing room where I don't have much time), so any leaders and enders just gets in the way of that. An L&E project would simply be a shiny object to distract my magpie eye/mind. I admire those who incorporate such into their work processes. And I do love to look at patterns and find best practices to make it quicker and easier. That falls into my natural curiosity and problem solving.

What a lovely giveaway of fat quarters! I can work on two projects at once if one is easy and the other more complicated. I actually do a combination of your way and the other. I have several projects going in separate boxes. I’ll work on one for a day or two then put it away and do another. The easy project I keep working on with the new project. Right now my easy project is the “potato chip” block in red, white and black prints. I need 120 of them!

My reaction to the LE challenge when Bonnie published it was the same. Strip piecing! No way was I going to cut up tiny squares. Having a good time using up strippy scraps. Thanks for a great example.

TY once again for taking us thru a much simpler, faster & more accurate way to use small rectangles! I would run from any pattern that suggested I cut 1 1/2” squares multiple times🤣🤣🤣😩 The fat quarter bundle is a beautiful array of color and will make something beautiful.💕🧵

Another good video with good information. I keep 2 or 3 projects going at the same time, but I work on them separately, if that makes sense. I stopped saving those little triangles cut off HST's (I'm talking about the small ones) because I have so much fabric and scraps in my stash, I decided I can't be bothered with saving those tiny pieces.

That fat quarter bundle is really pretty! For me, successful leader and enders projects are: 1) a different color way or shapes than those in my primary projects I am working on to avoid confusion; 2) projects where the thinking is done before and/or after assembling the block units; 3) have only one or two different units in the block and only one block style 3) are ruthlessly organized in a basket in the second tier of my rolling cart next to my machine. For example, I just finished sewing together 31 plus sign blocks made up of 20 4 patches made up of 80 2” squares and 5 3 1/2” squares (i got carried away-I only needed 30!). I planned each block with two colors for the background 4-patches and 1 contrasting color for the plus sign squares in advance. I cut each block out and clipped them in stacks and placed the stacks in my basket. As I sewed on my primary project, I unclipped one set of squares and added a small pile of each color for the 4 patches and put them on the table in front of the columns of my machine, ready to sew 2-patches. When those were sewn and pressed they went back in the basket and so on. By using a block with very simple construction and little variation, this worked beautifully as a leader and ender project with no thinking involved while working on my primary projects. Once all of the 4 patches were sewn, the project became a primary project to put together the blocks. While I could have sewn this more efficiently by strip piecing, it wouldn’t have been as easy for L&E, and I would have had lots of mismatched strings for the strips, which creates too many steps during the L&E sewing process. In terms of changing patterns, it is pretty easy for standard 4 or 9 patch based blocks. I just determine the base unit size and change that across the board. So if the base unit is 3 1/2” (3” finished in the block), I might make them 2 1/2” or 4 1/2”. The other thing I have started doing now that I use an Accuquilt, is removing seams where I can (converting HSTs to flying geese for example) to reduce bulk in the junctions, and using HSTs with the corners clipped in lieu of sew and flip squares. That leaves me with one less cut away triangle scrap and I find I sew them more accurately. (You can also cut these HSTs with a folded corner clipper or similar ruler instead of an Accuquilt). As I learn more and more about sewing quilts, I find I almost never follow a pattern as written anymore! Sorry for the long comment, lI am obviously also an opinionated quilter! 😂

This video was so useful to me & it has opened a world of possibilities to me. I love Bonnie Hunter too and would love to do a leader & ender project but I don't have a large ammount of scraps like y'all do and i don't want to piece 1.5 inch parts. However, strips & subcutting is my jam. I never looked at her challenges in that way before. Thank you so much! Its more obvious after you pointed it out. Congratulations to the winner of the quilt top! Thank you for hosting another giveaway. I would love to win some fat quarters! Have a great day! I know I will rethinking Bonnie's patterns.
