+chuansen yah I have a CP1700 with hp10 and hp11 cartridges and I disabled the printer's memory by sliding a thin piece of plastic between the battery and its contact/holder. Now, the printer can't read the expiration date built into the cartridge chip. Everything works perfectly except the levels always show low/empty on the printer's software and LCD display. When the cartridge actually runs out of ink, the printer displays an error blinking light and the LCD message scrolls BLACK (or CYAN, BLUE. YELLOW) INK CARTRIDGE EMPTY. I've been refilling HP 10 and 11 cartridges for over 10 years without resetting chips for ten years .Find the printer's memory backup battery. This works on the CP1700. I don't know about other HP printers.

+chuansen yah Just to be 100% clear: Disabling the printer's memory backup battery stops the cartridge from expiring. Once you install a new factory cartridge, the clock starts ticking and about 18 months after installation, the printer will refuse to print giving you an EXPIRED INK CARTRIDGE message on the LCD. You can refill cartridges as many times as you want before the chip times out and everything will work perfectly except your printer will show low ink levels on the refilled cartridge. You only have to disable the battery if you want to continue refilling ink cartridges past their expiration date. I just refilled an eight year old HP10 black cartridge today and it works perfectly in my HP CP1700.
