Back in the late 90s, a couple of years after my parents had divorced, I began visiting my dad in his new place, back in the smallish town he was born in. There wasn't much to do, so he had saved up some money and did something that was unthinkable to a child that was raised in such relative poverty as I had: He bought me and my sister a Nintendo 64 and a few games, including Ocarina of Time. It was a pretty tumultuous time in my life, and pretty stressful too, considering I was only around 9-10 when this happened. But that N64 and the games we got for it became a lifeline to me. My dad was a good guy, silent and emotionally distant, but he always went out of his way to provide everything we needed, and then some. One day he came into our room and sat down with his coffee to watch me play Ocarina of Time. We wound up "playing" the entire game together, with him sitting in the room and watching as I played, and I translated everything to him as he didn't really speak english. I was happy, since me and my dad, despite both of us loving each other, we didn't have that much in common. But as he sat in that room, talking with me about the game and feigning interest in it, I really did feel a bond between us unlike anything before that. And I do believe that even if he didn't really care about the game, he did care about me, and wanted to spend that time with me. Over time we did wound up growing closer together, but I still feel that after the divorce, my dad was kinda lost when it came to me and my sister. He didn't really know where to start anew with us. But Ocarina of Time provided the chance for him to do so. It might as well have been any of the other games we got, but the thing is, he walked into the room because he heard Song of the Storms as he passed my room. He walked in that day to listen to the song, and that led to me forming the most precious memories I had with him. There's a lot of him for me to remember, but him sitting there with me, watching a game he understood nothing about, would eventually become possibly my most beloved childhood memory. These lo-fi remixes, with the old CRT TV effects and the downbeat tempo manages to stir emotions in me I would've sworn were lost somewhere in my childhood. My dad died a few years ago, and I miss him every day. I replayed OOT every year until he passed. I've tried to do it again, but I can't play it without breaking down. Because a part of him lives in that game, and I can't run around Hyrule saving the day without hearing him narrate my adventure. And it breaks my heart every time.
