Analysis and translation, by Karl Karlov: Ernst Enno is considered an impressionist poet who excels in creating moods through symbolism approaching the surreal. Though living to only age 58 himself, here he poignantly conjures the reflective, bitter-sweet mood of an aged person looking back on life, and contrasts the song he once sang on life’s road to the compelling song that the road now sings to him.
