obviously when purchasing auto's, servicing is an integral part of ownership. I'm seeing ppl who impulse purchase without the resources or wherewithal to do just that... they may receive it as a grad gift or decide to treat themselves and empty the bank on a new Panerai. ,while working nightshift at McDonalds. I'm older now, near retirement, and own a couple auto's, but mostly solar quartz'.no beat error checks, time graphs, no regulations, servicing or out of left field movement stops for whatever reason. i can trust them with my life literally, while an auto is more temperamental. somehow tho aficionados are obsessed with century old technology , lol i get it but it isn't practical, nostalgic maybe

Hey good video. Makes mechanical sense. Things need to be exercised and mainsprings need to be cycled. I subscribed.
@RandallSlickКүн бұрын
As a man in possession of an 8 1/2" wrist, you are, with respect a statistical outlier. Bulova shot themselves in the foot (or wrist) making a watch with no smaller alternative. Maybe true to the original, specified presumably for astronauts with poor eyesight, but less so for the general buyer or the daily wearer. A shame. Maybe a 40 will emerge one day.

43mm isn't as bad as the older 45mm version, but I see your point
@hibernopithecus7500Күн бұрын
Looks surprisingly good on the gator & tricolour nato imo, but the blue nato looked out of place. Still pretty versatile though for such a specific design. Or maybe I’m just feeling Bulova extra right now as I’ve just picked up my first, an all-steel Precisionist chrono. 😉

Do you have a good watch strap changing tool/thing majigie that you could recommend? I have a few NATO straps and a mesh bracelet, but I have relied on the watch shop to change out for me.
@TalkingTimepiecesКүн бұрын
If you buy a good watch tool kit, it usually comes with screwdrivers, drive pins and hammer, and a screw-driven pin tool. Or get a specialty pin tool like this: www.uhren-zubehoer.de/Equipment/Watch-Tools/Tools-for-straps/Bergeon-Pin-remover-with-spindle.html

I need help. Im not into watch collecting. But my Dad got a rolex as a milestone marker when i was born. He only ever wears that one watch. Thats the only watch he has and he wears it every day. Right now I have a Casio GShock that serves its purpose very well that i spend $350 on. But i want something more refined. Something that has a more refined style and not rugged. Am I supposed to go for a Rolex or a Grand Seiko and drop 3k+ on it and call it a day? Im not a watch guy, and i see myself purchasing one more watch in my lifetime. Should I go for one of the luxury giants? Or can i get away with a microbrand? Im currently 32 yrs old. Im on the market for a refined style watch. This is it, if not one more after it.

I'd go with one of the respected but lesser-known brands like Sinn or Nomos. Check out the Nomos Club Sport line. Glasshutte is as good or maybe even better than Swiss, and way cheaper

Are the plastic pallet fork and escape wheel necessary a bad thing? Can it be serviced when needed?
@TalkingTimepieces4 күн бұрын
Yes, they can be replaced with spare parts. The big issue people have is the.plastic itself

I see where you're coming from, and I don't personally have anything against silicon in all watches. The use of materials that are difficult to replace puts their kind of romantic qualities at a lower category for me. I like my Spring Drive, but I dont hold any romantic ideals about the watch itself. Ultimately, Grand Seiko will need to be repaired by Grand Seiko, and those parts may not exist when the electrical components wear out. Hairsprings are the least impactful for Silicon use on that metric. All hairsprings are very specialized, and replacing them is already difficult depending on the watch. Spring drives seem like a better alternative than Silicon hairsprings in my line of thinking. I'm not sure I can rationalize it past if it's difficult to repair. It might as well be accurate. Companies using plastic polymers and Silicon parts for the escape wheel, fork and other high wear components rub the the wrong way. At that level of unservicablility, any quartz watch seems like a superior alternative.
@TalkingTimepieces4 күн бұрын
As long as there are spare parts there should be no problem. I believe parts will be available forna long time. You have to hjnt, but you can still find parts for many old watches lime the Bulo a Accutron, for example. I personally don't think parts availability will be an issue for the forseeable future

Modern synthetic lubricants make this much less of an issue today than previously. Older mineral-based oils present in vintage watches can be effectively removed with modern cleaning techniques and then replaced with more stable synthetic lubricants. That said, I feel that vintage pieces often suffer far more damage due to improper storage and exposure to humidity and moisture ingression.
@TalkingTimepieces3 күн бұрын
You're good for about 6~8 years with synthetics, IMO. How the watch is stored is very important, as you point out

PLASTIC PARTS: There is confusion about whether or not the Powermatic 80 movement uses plastic parts (similar to the Sistem51). First, it's important to acknowledge that there is more than one Powermatic 80 caliber. For example, The Tissot Luxury line has the Powermatic 80.111 with 23 jewels and uses plastic parts. The COSC rated Powermatic 80.811 found in the Tissot Ballade does not.
