I use a 50mm lens for landscapes for one reason, it portrays naturally without the distortions from the wider angle lenses...!

Was at a location during a sunset. Every photographer was looking out toward the sun setting. But the real shot was when I turned the other way and caught the setting suns light on the clouds and landscape BEHIND me. Agree, do not focus on one obvious thing, look around.

May I ask what metering mode did you use to make a moody look? Did you need to use spot metering? Usually matrix metering would even out the light condition and the look is flat.

I owned the Canon 24-105 mm f4 version 1 twice and both of them broke down (aperture cable). They don't deserve the L tag ! I'm considering the sigma art now.

I took the same picture with a fuji X-E1 and a fuji X-A5. E1 is 16 mp and A5 is 24 mp. The E1 photo was nice and clean and the A5 photo was very mushy and full of noise. In fact the E1 photo had a lot more details in the shadows. And in the A5 photo the highlights was blown out. I find I am pushed towards using older cameras with low pixel counts like eos 5D mark 1 and 20D and its confusing.

What happens to resolution when panoramas are done by the camera?

what was that tripod head you showed?

The most important tip is the one that you did not mention: Rotate about the nodal point of the lens to avoid parallax errors. This point is the entry pupil of the lens and is best determine experimentally. A nodal mount is required. This is a simple extension that moves the camera back so that the nodal point is over the tripod's rotation point.

Tilt/shift lenses are the best landscape lenses. Shots fits perfectly together, you can correct perspective and no need to turn your camera with tripod etc.

I have created stitched panoramas, cropped panoramas, and single-shot panoramas. All worked well.

Toma, we both enjoy photographing trails in the forest. There are a lot of panoramas of grand views outside of the forest. I like the idea of doing a panorama inside the forest and including a trail. I hope you will discuss this in more detail in the future. I'm curious how you handle getting everything in focus when you have plants and trees that are very close and will be included in the panorama. Can you also do a panorama with your camera close to the ground? Also, what do you think are the best sizes for panoramas?

Do you use Adobe products to do your stitching or another program not Adobe based?

I only recently discovered Michael Kenna, and was immediately smitten. A point he emphasizes in many of his interviews is how helpful it is to study the work of other photographers, to the degree that he has gone to the locations used by some of his favorites, immersing himself fully in their oeuvre. Very much like what you're doing in your "Learn From Other Artists" series. I stumbled on this one while searching Michael Kenna. I'll now move on to the next! Excellent tips so thanks! One thing I took away from your photos is that even the examples of when NOT to convert to B&W still looked awesome. Looking forward to your other videos. I find that photography in the forest is the most challenging subject matter. Mine forest shots all look boring but granted, catching the forest on a foggy day is no simple task for the hobby photographer.

🌺🌻🌺 As you and others have said before, take the time to figure out what ones eye is actually catching within the whole of what your eye is seeing.... or something like that. I miss it often but thanks to cropping within software I can train myself to see what I was seeing and not all that my eye saw.

OK, I have lived here forever... there are no "grand vistas", nothing exceptional and nothing much of interest. I've been all over my area in my 70 plus years. While I do take pictures where I can but its not much fun. Not very compelling views. hum drum to say the least. Oh well. carry on. Good video. Great points and made me think differently so maybe I can do better with my black and white next outing.

If we do that, lets give the whole thing to a tin box AI and take the humanity out of photography. i will use lightroom to correct weaknesses in my camera's representation of what human eyes do with the world. that's enough.Use tools to express what i thought i saw.

The extra knob on the head, just below the arca Swiss clamp looks like it is for panoramas. No need for a levelling plate/ball, just get the camera level using the ball head , lock it tight. Then pan the camera around by loosening that extra knob. Or perhaps it’s designed for another purpose?
