Personally? I could build such data using sr latches. Problem is, though, that sr latches are wastefull, since there are 8 torches, only 1 output is used. A sr latch can store 8 bits of information. But how to utiliue it all? Stone blocks. Oh yeah, also spacing.

You could probably remove a lot of pistons by simply using a 11:1 slope, instead of 1:1. Just let the pistons push 12 concrete blocks instead of just 1.
