You've just got yourself another channel member! This sounds like a fascinating aspect of music production to explore and develop skills in, also I really enjoy your style. Looking forward to seeing the course develop. Thanks Dan.

You've already put in the effort with the entirety of your career and knowledge. It may be basic and low effort to you now but it's vast to those who didn't know, and a refresher for those who did know. Hope everything is going good and thanks for all the videos

Check out locals for your pay videos. It’s a great idea, I’ve been doing this for long enough to where I probably wouldn’t pay for it, but if it was super cheap I might. I just feel I’m pretty much already there, but I’d still love to go through the course just to see if I’m missing anything.

I tell students all the time: stop sweeping around,. By the time they think they got it, their ears are mush and they are no longer really aware of what they were looking for in the first place. Listen and learn. Good one. Its insanely annoying that I never hear any one say that. Several thumbs up.

Hey Dan! idk if u have it on ur channel but theres one important thing on a way to good mix. so ez and so important. yeah u have to eq all the sounds but aswell u need to control and usually automate its volume fader. thats it. noobs always trying to put hella tonn of VSTs on group channels to get it sounds better, but it just needs to be adjusted by volume. adjusted by +/- 1 db. need to find that spot. when -1 db drown ur sound in mix and +1db makes it stick out. and theres no any plugin that will do it for u ;)

Dan, have you seen the ZL Equalizer plugin? Seems to be really feature-packed for a free Pro-Q alternative, but it almost seems to good to be true. Could you perhaps make an analysis like the one you made with TDR Nova?

When I got my music tech degree in the early 2000s, ear training, ensemble participation, private instrument and composition lessons, standard music theory I-III, and one term of basic classical piano lessons in a classroom of about 20 were all requirements for graduation.

I’ve had nothing but problems trying to find a Windows laptop for audio. Hours of fiddling with configuration trying to mitigate the DPC latency issues that plague Windows laptops. Switched to a MacBook Pro and all the issues vanished. Mac OS is clearly superior for realtime processing on a laptop.

I'm a musician, but if I were in need of improving my mixing skills (which right now are only being used for demos) I would happily pay for a deep and comprehensive course if taught by you, the same way I would happily pay for (better) sound treatment and a pair of decent speakers. Not only that: There is probably no other creator I would pay for a mixing course other than you. Lots of other great guys in the youtube audio world, of course - Wytse from White Sea, Warren from PLAP, Mike from Mixing With Mike, Nic from Panorama... - learned a lot from them but your approach is unique

Would love to buy the course. But can it be a platform that we can download the raw files from. Don't want youtube etc. Compression, and at least for audio, lossless isn't crazy big in file size compared to HD video, so a flac would be great. I know youtube's pretty good with quality these days but I'd feel more reassured playing a flac/wav in vlc. (patreon maybe supports this. Or patreon with google drive links is what another youtuber I follow does).
@DanWorrall2 күн бұрын
I'll maybe look into this option when I host the finished series somewhere. But honestly I think your concern is misplaced. I upload my videos with uncompressed PCM audio. Assuming you're listening in a browser that supports it, you'll get one level of (really rather good) opus compression. I tested it, it's full bandwidth up to 20k. If in doubt use Chrome to watch them, I promise you won't be missing anything important.
@scottramsay3671Күн бұрын
@@DanWorrall Fair enough. I suspected I might be straying into the audiophile "just boost the bit depth/samplerate/copper purity to get better quality, without understanding why none of those are the bottleneck" territory. And now that I think of it, in the real world when I'm mixing through a few SM58s via a mid range analog desk at my church, I'm going to need to deal with a noise flaw that's at least that of youtube. Not too mention the real world background noise of the amp fans, room A/C etc. I think youtube one time purchase might be good (if they still support that). Membership may be the easiest way, but annoying that it would be a monthly non one time payment. The bottom line is it's probably not too hard to put it on KZfaq and something else like patreon. I look forward too it :).

@mjk52542 күн бұрын
1st what is cramping? 2nd I hear a difference No cramping sounds more open and less compressed Cramping sounds compressed No cramping sounds a bit more appealing especially as an instrumental. I think the cramping might help tighten things up if there was a vocal in the mix.
@DanWorrall2 күн бұрын
Forget about which one you prefer, it's not relevant. The EQ was dialed in to demonstrate the problem, not to sound good. And it's not compression either: the cramped curve has the wrong shape, is all.
For beginners, it's better to invest in AI or automated EQs like Gullfoss, Zynaptiq, or Sonible, rather than spending money on tutorials.

Uh-oh, I disagree. This is a very wrong mindset. These AI plugins don't take CONTEXT into consideration, so they aren't a silver bullet for a good mix.
@AnktualКүн бұрын
While AI plugins aren't perfect, they provide a solid foundation for beginners. They help streamline the learning process, allowing users to achieve decent mixes quickly. Over time, as they develop their skills, they can better understand context and make finer adjustments. Moreover, these AI tools are mostly model-trained, so they do take context into consideration. Investing in these tools can be a practical first step before diving deeper into manual EQ techniques.

My audio engineering course actually has an ear training module! Very useful stuff. Everything from sine waves to pink noise. Even A/B mix comparison. Of course university debt is a much steeper price to pay than a patreon subscription haha.

Some of my favorite mixers have very little technical understanding. They intuitively know the balance that makes a feel, and can’t be bothered to care why. Primarily, I’m talking about musicians. I’ve learned a lot by spending some quiet time with them. A very famous salsa performer showed me how to find the volume of the cowbell, and I’m being serious. It changed my ability to mix salsa forever. It is the most important instrument in the band and finding its volume unlocks the secret of salsa’s amazing polyrhythmic and harmonic fundamentals. It took all of 60 seconds. My mind was blown and I owe him forever. EQ? Panning? Effects? Pfft! Surely you jest.
