Good review Frankie and talking points; I think there were a number of issues, AWB having a slight knock, Todibo having lack of training time with first team players, likes of Bowen and Paq still not up to speed/match fitness, some players having a bad game (Antonio), and mostly JLo sticking to the players that he has used throughout the pre-season, plus we shouldnt discount Villa who are a good balanced side - lets see what he does when we face Palace, where some of these issues should get resolved and there should be a change in line-up and hopefully in fortune

I agree with your line up... That's what I'd choose. I don't think anyone can say Lopetegui got it wrong. He hasn't had enough time to give the existing players a fair try. We as fans know where there are, weaknesses but if the coach is to keep to his word and say every player starts on a, fresh page, then he's got to see it for himself. We haven't even finished signing players yet, there's injured players, ones he has to choose to sell, integrating new players, and waiting for some existing players that came back late to get match fit. That's an awful lot of work,, especially when you're implementing a new style of play. Hopefully he'd have seen enough against Villa to work out who he doesn't want and get more players ready. Let's all be patient.

Lot written below about JL getting it wrong. He's a different manager who can have a different impact on players. One game and people are jumping off the wagon. After one season, Emery was lambasted as a crap manager by Arsenal fans (and no doubt a lot of west ham fans), yet it took 3 years of patience for Arteta to get it right. Now look at Villa. Seems a few people have short memories. Patience, folks.

Soucek made 10 passes in 100 minutes that was the length of the match,1 pass every 10 minutes of which he had 50% completion.Those stats are nothing short of embarrassing and we will win no games if he stays in our midfield Frankie.

He made many mistakes Frankie but there were encouraging signs compared to Moyes version of things.Team selection wrong,formation and tactics v Villa wrong he was schooled by Emery for periods of the game but not all of the game.Subs too late and too much time between his changes and Emerys changes.Making Bowen on reflection I think will be a mistake as big as Moyes mistake making Zouma captain last season was.Imhope he is able to address the mistakes he made and quickly ,ie by Palace game to be honest.Picking Soucek was age mistake,along with Coufal it almost mean Moyes legacy remains and goes when the Czech pair go,sooner the better for me.

It was a week too early against a potential top 4 team. Things will improve. We need to dump 5 or so old guard and buy a couple more to be a fantastic window. Then a great cup run and a top 6 place.

I don’t think anyone is writing him off yet and everyone will give him time, but you said your self, he got it wrong so is open to criticism. The frustration was it was obviously wrong, every fan who saw that line up knew we were in trouble . Yes playing new players was a risk but a 50/50 risk is better than the 90%chance of failure that team was.

Got it wrong from start to finish. Starting line-up 3/4 defenders held 70 goals last season.. you don't go with that if you have quality on the bench.. First 30mins was dreadful, and we were lucky to get the penalty and go into half-time Level The 2nd half was good in moments, but on 73min takes off bowen when he our best finisher at the club... For what it's worth, I'm still very positive about us - we're not a team yet, new ideas, tactics, players and understandings have to be forged; we were up against a fabulous team and coach. Hoping JL learned that Ant is not the one to start with: give Fulkrug fresh players to work with and develop some understanding and he will bear fruit. Paq as a free ranging 10 further forward and left please & soucek back, Kudus in the middle, bowen right all feeding the 'krug and I think we would have made villa more reactive rather than proactive. No thanks to Duran - he'll probably never score again! :-)

I'm deey concerned about the hole in the middle of the park - we dont appear to have an 8 with the physicality and pace required, also centre forward, Antonio was pretty awful and Fullkrug is a decent player at the wrong team - we dont look like a side that's going to play to the strengths of a big lump that doesn't want to run the channels. The less said about Ings the better. Kudus clearly MOTM but wasted on the left. We have problems that need to be solved.

I saw a lot to be happy about in that game, I don't see why everyone is so gloomy. Villa were one of the best disciplined sides in the league last year and they showed the same chops in this game, too, but we were by no means that far off the pace. To be sure they were more polished but that's to be expected given they don't have that many changes to their set up--same manager and mostly the same players, whereas we have new options in just about every key area, totally new relationships and game plan. The stats bear my assessment out, too, we matched them in just about every metric other than--obviously--the most important one, this was never the case last season. The only stat Villa totally dominated us was through-balls completed which was 4 to 0, and I think this is a telling feature of players not yet being familiar enough with the new system--with Paqueta and the running options on both sides this will improve. Plus Wan Bissaka is a good passer of the ball and he will certainly replace Coufal (thank you for your service) as soon as he is properly up to speed. Definitely glass more than half full, so happy that dire Moyesball is firmly in the past.

We were lucky. We could easily have been 4-0 down at half time. We played an experienced top four side. There have been some angry harsh fans and we are all entitled to our opinions. Your analysis of this match is measured and fair. I was disappointed yesterday. It was interesting however to see Lopetegui’s tactics, and subs ….and to see him furious at the final whistle. There will be a lot of discussion and hard work this week.

I was disappointed with the result, but not disheartened. That was not our best starting line up and a few players under-performed, but it was just one game. Villa hit the ground running and we didn't, Duran scored his inevitable winner and we came away without any points. But hey! we're only three points off the Champions' League places. COYI!!

I’m a Villa fan and FairPlay that was a good analysis of the game boys. You just came up against a very good clinical well drilled Villa side. You picked up on the decisive things that Emery does during a game that makes the difference from a draw and 3 points. Good luck for the season anyway fellas 👍

Selection issues, broken tactics & transitioning players didn't adjust in the game to Villa. Talismen Bowen was quiet & was subbed, which summed up the overall team performance. Start all new signings with the best of the established players & enforce the J-Lo game style.
