I “forced” my kid (12) to take some skating lesson once a week. Honestly, I was conflicted because I didn’t want to feel like it was for me or was being “that” parent. He had a great game where he felt strong about his skating and admitted that his lesson has helped a lot. Yes, we shouldn’t make them do anything so early in life, but it also helps to nudge your kid.

In his treatise on painting, circa 1500’s, Leonardo DaVinci says the exact same things you guys are talking about in the first chapter. Most people that have bright visions of becoming something great have no inclination that these types of sacrifices need to be made.

I don't disagree. From our experience, the skating coach didn't make a connection between the drills and what that is supposed to mean for skating actual skating-everything was done in isolation.. Also, in a group setting they tend to use a broad brush and don't address each individual's deficiencies. This was especially true for the hockey stance (getting low), and the stride-in terms of getting low, to be able to fully extend the leg to generate power...Also, doing this once/week isn't nearly enough to consolidate skills.

Last year my son was the standout player on his team, almost all losses, and parents were very jealous. He got a hard time from some of his coaches, and other players.. the organization gave him a look to move him to AAA... but said he wasn't ready, fall tryouts he had a spot with a AAA team because someone was leaving but last minute they changed their mind and he will be in AA for another year, so we moved to a team that was demoted from AAA to AA because they lost in AAA so much, so this team will likely be one of the best AA teams with the possibility of moving up again if they can really win a lot..is this a bad idea?

Us has usndtp which picks then has em play together for entire seasons. The u17 team in usa plays full season together then goes to iihf tourney. Other issues are not adapting to the modern game. Picking big power d or fowards for tournaments then going to iihf tournament this creates a skill mismatch. Then lets not forget some politics which stops some kids from either not making teams or not playing in right spots for the teams to be given best chance to win.

Andy… this is complete BS. If you develop your players properly (and there is so many terrible coaches out there) you can win by NOT shortening your bench. In fact it becomes an advantage as you can push the pace, the whole game. If you can’t win without shortening your bench (which rarely works), move out of the way for real coaches that can.

First episode I’ve seen. Really like your guys content. Parents and players need to see this. Hockeys about the journey and relationships not the wins and losses. Not sure of the maps accuracy. If this is the map from Reddit it’s not correct. There are 30+ players born in NJ and and 40+ from Pennsylvania it shows a zero for both.

That is a great point about goalies. As a 8U/Mite coach and a goalie for my entire career I am really concerned at how young these kids are specializing as goalies. I don't let my 8U kids play only goalie, they have to skate with out goalie pads as well but starting in 10U I don't know if they can even do this. I didn't play goalie only until I was in my second season of PeeWees. I would skate one practice a week. We had two goalies and we rotated so I would bring two bags so I could back up but also skate out. What do you guys think? How soon should goalies be specializing in goaltending only?

There are a quite a few former players, though, if you look them up you will see they were born in places that are now merely neighbourhoods of Toronto or they were boroughs but many were towns in Metro Toronto, names of place such as Mimico, Etobicoke, North York, Downsview, Scarborough, East York. If you add all these places to the Toronto count, then you would get the actual Toronto amount of today. Look up Brendan Shanahan, Michael Bunting...those are a few of many examples

I feel that EVERY hockey parent in minor hockey needs these Stats ingrained into them ASAP. When you think your watching and seeing lights out players who look like superstars at 12 or 13 , they might not actually be the top level players that you think they are. There is always another level of play that you have not seen yet. Every year the level of play doubles and 99% of kids just struggle to keep up and make spots on these top tier teams. Remember that when you see a SUPERSTAR kid on AAA , that there are most likely FULL teams with kids that good or better.

Respectfully I completely disagree with this sentiment… (love your channel btw). Many kids at 12/11/10 U genuinely do thrive at certain positions… including centermen. I don’t have any kids of my own, so no I’m not talking about my own kid 😂), but I do coach and see many kids naturally play center (responsible in D zone, great face off taker, two way player, first guy back on D)… verses others who don’t do those things.

I agree that all kids will eventually grow up and use profanity in some way. I think it’s better to teach kids when it’s appropriate and when it’s inappropriate. If they master that, they are actually better off in the long run. And in the end they are just words. Words are not evil. In fact they are arbitrary. It’s your intent with saying them that matters, and that’s something that kids should be taught about.

I agree and somebody needs to talk some sense into the people overseeing our game. We had a kid suspended for 5 games for apparently calling a kid a "fucking pussy". The other player was 30 feet away standing with the referee and 1 linesman and they didn't hear it. The penalty was enforced based on the word of the other linesman. The penalty was for using "Discriminatory Language". First, this language is not discriminatory. Discrimination means to singling someone out based on race, sex, religion etc (Don't believe me? Look it up). Second, the definition of Pussy used in this context, means timid or weak. This language may be considered vulgar but clearly is not discriminatory. Third, as someone that played AAA/Junior/Varsity hockey (and I have talked to others that played those levels) none of us have had to spend thousands of dollars or countless hours on the couch working thru the phycological damage we suffered because somebody said something to us on the ice/dressing room. What ever happened to "sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me"? Time for all the snowflakes to grow up. I am not saying discriminatory language is OK. However if discriminatory language is used, should we not lead with education for the player first? Why is the penalty more severe for language than physical misconduct. A player can hit another player from behind and maybe get a 1 game suspension. And as we were told by multiple referees this season, only if the other player is hurt is it a 5 minute major and a 1 game suspension? So I can break your neck and get a slap on the wrist but don't cll someone a bad name. Time for the adults to start behaving like adults and drop the snowflake act.

I agree with you for the most part here but where I differ is that with kids that are developing their minds, swearing short circuits the thinking process of being able to express themselves properly instead of landing on default or all purpose swear words and the adults in the room are the role models. They can have the swearing among themselves but they should have the expectation to think. But shit slips and that's okay too 😊. Obviously for older or grown people it's different.

6:17 IMO, when Ridly Greig took his empty net slap shot, and Morgan Reilly cross checked him in retaliation, the only problem with that whole situation, was that Greig seems to be completely surprised that someone was trying to punish him afterwards. If you wanna be a hotdog, go ahead. But you can’t be one, and expect impunity with it. That’s all.

I've been listening for awhile now and you guys end up focusing to much on parents and the drama around the game. Most episodes end up that way with sprinkles of talk that can actually help your game. More stuff about how to practice, mechanics, strength training specifics etc would add more to these talks. I get free flow conversations are nice and easy, but you two have been doing it so long that without having more of a plan for the podcast or a guest to give a different focus it all ends up being the same. maybe even going over some of the footage you guys offer for training and going more in-depth into them would be interesting.

@@TrentGustus Good stuff!! Your son (well every kid) deserves to be respected and have a great hockey experience. As usual, it’s adults ruining kids sport. The yelling “skate” is one of the words. I think is ok for a coach to yell at his players. By age 13-14, that should not be required anymore either. Effort at competitive is an expectation.

I roll the lines evenly if it’s 5v5 for the first 2 and a half periods. If we’re down a goal or it’s tied with 5-10 minutes left the best kids are going out. They have to learn sooner or later. It’s 8U elite but the kids and coaches both want to win at the end of the day.

You should never be allowed to coach again. It’s not about YOU, it’s about the kids. Educate yourself. 90% of kids would rather play and lose than sit and win. It’s been proven over and over again. Get your ego off the bench. If you don’t know how to develop 8 yr olds, you certainly don’t belong in the fraternity. To you get personal enjoyment out of making kids 8 yrs old cry??

Regarding swearing I think it’s age/gender dependent, and most importantly, the delivery and intent behind the words. Swear words have power, that’s why we say them, and I believe it’s never appropriate to swear AT a youth player, but it can be appropriate to swear to them … if that makes sense. Do NOT berate a player with a string (or even one) swear words. But, a strategically placed swear word can emphasize a point, motivate, be comedic, endear, etc. It’s so contextual and situational that it takes a lot of mature understanding to navigate properly.

I personally am not a fan of the full ice hockey at that 6, 7, 8, 9 age range. Part of that is because it limits their touches because the kids are just so dang spread out. Are there any other sports out there that the little kids play on a professional sized playing surface with the same ball/puck? I can't think of one. I also don't like the fact that most of these full ice leagues/tournaments use full sized nets and you have 3.5'-4.5' goalies in there. that is a huge disadvantage to that goalie. I just don't see the benefit to this as most of the time these games really only benefit the couple really good skaters on each team. They don't encourage passing or puck control or even good shooting. Then comes in the complication factors of knowing the rules because if you are playing a full ice game, you now have to learn offsides, icing, on the fly line changes and positions because you really can't play full ice without some level of knowledge of positions.
