Hi, I haven't even reached a million dollars but I've also dropped into the darkness. This video meant a lot to me, gave me a lot of courage - though I haven't forgiven myself fully, yet, I felt like I'm on the way. Thank you Mike and Rich, you guys are just fantastic!

Yeah, no. The reason Metallica is a sellout is because they lost that unique edge that made people love them since “Kill ‘em all” until “Death Electric”, where they lost it trying to appeal to more mainstream audiences. They are a shadow of their former self, no longer as hard as they used to be, no longer taking risks like they did back when they first appeared live on MTV and stopped giving an F mid song and just PLAYED their heart out. You can be successful without being a sell out. Bring a sellout means you lost that which makes you YOU for money, and it happens all the time. It is not a good thing.

Oh yeah! Never try to go general, you'll be competing with EVERYONE. I launched my recent service business, based on my personal experience, BUT I was new in experience level and wouldn't have been able to get clients, unless I was speaking directly from my own experience, to them & their experience. Canada's Tax Fairy Godmother specializing in helping people who are 5-10 years behind in filing taxes, self-employed and wanting to get setup well so that taxes aren't a stressful thing, and ADHD or anxiety over dealing with the CRA. Finally after almost 600 clients IN my niche coming to me from organic only posts, I've grown beyond my personal capacity, and it's time to grow! I have your guidance from your books & friendship, over the last FIFTEEN YEARS, to thank Mike.

No. A nail technician requires an education. It’s not a learn on the job career. And for the last few years nail tech’s have been in hot demand. It can even be difficult to find a good experienced one that will take you as a client.

Somehow I can't see myself watching a car mechanic on social media doing his stuff or waiting for another email. Frankly - I'd do everything to avoid thinking about spending my money on another repair. I'm not against content marketing. But I see that a lot of people are talking about the same things all the time, while at the same time skipping other important things. Like in the case of a car mechanic - doing everything to be easily "findable", optimizing processes, taking care of positive reviews etc. Besides, people tend to focus on marketing tactics and forget about innovation, doing something different/differently than competitors, making their services better/faster/cheaper/more comprehensive etc. A simple example: I go to one mechanic because he's excellent and has decent prices. But he's hard to reach (no email, no "modern" ways of reaching him), tends to forget things etc. It's a bit frustrating. On the other hand, when I go to a car dealer's shop, they are more expensive, but - a simple thing - they have a database of their customers. They know what's been done previously, they can track the repairs, etc. Everything is smoother and faster. My point is that marketing is important, but we can't forget about constantly improving our services and offerings, and we can't skip the fact, that some markets are absurdly competitive.

I disagree with Seva's Millennial-shaming which is too common, especially since I did the math. She graduated in 2002 and had her first child at age 18; therefore, she was born in the early 1980s. Seva is a Millennial.

Mike, thank you so much for this insightful and informative video. The deep truths you share here, are so relevant to examples beyond just small business. The trap is real and affects businesses of any size, even divisions or departments of those businesses. I've been following Profit First for many years now and it's transformed how I look at my finances. It also allowed me to pinpoint other severe shortfalls in my business that I might otherwise have never had the clarity to notice! Ultimately allowing me to see that my business was not profitable, at least not without a serious pivot.

Fascinating truth! There's another side to that coin. This short could have been simplified greatly in ways that would have subtracted from its appeal. For example, by removing the punchline, and showing the winner, first. I'm thinking of a script like this: "This remote [show photo] is sexier than that remote [show other photo] because it's simpler. [Show face; outro; end scene.]" Plus, I'm attracted to the complex remote for a different, nerdy reason. You gotta know your audience, also.

Love it all, just wondering...if you don't have a BIG business, would just calling your best clients suffice? I have a cleaning business and taking everyone out for dinner is just not feasible lol I think also they would think it's a bit weird that their cleaner wants to take them to dinner hahaha
