Congratulations!! We reuse it and just clean it with dawn dish soap.

I could never get my Muscovy/Geese flock to come back to the coop at sundown on their own. I managed workable a compromise. I have them trained to come running (from anywhere on the 9-acre property) to the sound if a standard Coaches Whistle bein' blasted. Anywhere, any time of day they'll come a runnin if I blow The Whistle. I have to call them in at night ... but at least I don't have to chase 'em down all over The Homestead to find 'em. There's A LOT of hidey holes on 9 acres.
@Harvestlore_ncАй бұрын
That’s a great idea! Did you feed them every time you blew the whistle?

Thank you for your share I have a 3-week going on 4 weeks do you know how old do they have to be with other chicks that they haven't been around before?
@Harvestlore_nc2 ай бұрын
I would put them in a separate cage with the other chickens for a week or two. Let them see the chicks and get used to them being around each other and then supervise them as they greet each such other. It’s not so much the age that matters, it’s the chickens getting used to each other. Use a dog crate for now so they get used to each other. Hope this helps!

If you don't mind me asking. What was the total cost for this build?
@Harvestlore_nc2 ай бұрын
The total cost was just south of $900. You can build it cheaper if you go on Facebook market place and look at pallets and wood that might be for sale. We were in a bit of a rush. We still got a great deal at a local wood mill! I would definitely recommend going to a local wood mill. You will get a cheaper rate on the wood and metal paneling.

I just want to share, that If you are getting pasty butt like that, you need to change your food. Most times pasty butt is caused by nutritional deficits and/or too much heat. Sometimes it can stressed related too. But your chicks look comfy and chill (I'd give a tad but more space, its 0.5-1 sq ft per bird). I have raised hundreds of chicks and have never had pasty butt. If you really don't want to change your food, you could also try adding in some rooster booster or nutritional yeast.
@Harvestlore_nc2 ай бұрын
Thank you for the tip! We will absolutely keep that in mind when we start raising more. We think it was stress related due to our cats sneaking into the room and scaring them.

Do your ducks leave the crops alone?
@Harvestlore_nc2 ай бұрын
They don’t really go over to the garden much. They stay on the side of the yard where the coop is most of the time. They love playing in the woods more than the open field.
