Hello! Do you cut the roots just for aesthetics, or is there some other reason to do it? Thanks!
@aquaescapist6 сағат бұрын
Hi there! I am keeping the top side plants constrained to keep them small and because if they get their roots into the substrate they will take over the entire tank! Thanks for the interest and have a great day;)

Hello! I've been following the evolution of this wonderful piece of nature and I just noticed how thick the glass appears to be. Would you kindly share the thickness, it appears to be something around 10mm, how far am I? Thanks!
@aquaescapist8 күн бұрын
Yeh spot on! Actually originally it was supposed to be 8mm glass- but it ended up being made in 10mm because that was what was available at the time. I like the look but it has caused some tense moments with some tight glass fittings at times!! Thanks for the interest and have a great day;)
@heldersanches8 күн бұрын
@@aquaescapist Thanks for the quick reply. I'm in the process of building myself a 80x25*20, which is a considerable smaller volume of water than yours, and I haven't decided on the thickness. Where I live, a 2mm difference in the thickness might double the price of the glass. But I'd rather play safe than be to frugal, I guess. 😁
@aquaescapist8 күн бұрын
Yeh it’s a balance for sure- if you consider the options first and make your best plan after taking as many factors into account - you can’t really do anything more- doesn’t mean it will be right , but at least we gave it a good shot!

I only really had one chance to make this happen and I couldn’t access the type of tank that I wanted so I settled for having this one built at my own custom measurements - ideally I would have liked to copy the Green machine 120 cm shallow tanks - but in the end the lighting, filtration, hardscape, substrate and plants would have been just too much financially- so I am very satisfied to have been able to go with this 10mm starfire glass, 900x400x200 mm tank (72 litres) I am very chuffed to be able to go hard and not have to make too many compromises:) thanks so much for the interest

Thank you so much for the kind words! That’s inspiration in itself. Most of what’s growing on top was collected from private property in far north QLD rainforest so I’m afraid I don’t have plant IDs for those.

Hey there! I am sorry I cannot give species names for most of what is growing on the topside as it’s been collected from far nth qld rainforest at a private property we have access to. I don’t cut leaves to keep it small ( only remove them altogether from the base if required) I think it’s the harsh conditions and root restrictions keeping it under control- thanks;)
