I hope it's still good in 2024. I bought one secondhand this week to pair with my Sigma 150-600 sport instead of buying a Z8 and Z180-600. Early days but I'm loving it. Now to book a safari with the money I've saved 🙂

Hi Robert can you please advise me on the nikon D500 camera, I'm looking to purchase this camera to use with my sigma 150-600mm lens, I've found one on MPB where I've bought most of my gear, the only issue is the shutter count, its over 300k but the camera is cataloged as excellent condition, is it worth a punt, and if so would you recommend I have it serviced?, Waiting for your response 👍
@Robert-Bishop
@Robert-Bishop Күн бұрын
It's difficult to say Steve. 300k+ is definitely high, but it does also depend on the condition of the camera and how well it has been looked after. I know people with shutter counts of over 200k and working fine, but I've never actually come across a D500 with a 300k+ shutter account. All I can say is that the build quality is excellent, so I guess that's in its favour. The price is also a big factor too - if it's the one that's about £600, I would say that's about okay, but personally I'd go for the "good" one that's slightly more expensive but has the shutter count around 144k. It just has a few aesthetic scuff marks by the looks of it. I think a service can only be a good thing, as long as it's by someone who knows what they're doing. I feel that may have confused more than helped, but I hope you get a good result with whatever you decide to go for. 😊

Morning Robert, firstly thank you for replying back so promptly, no you haven't confused the issue I think I would have been getting that camera for the wrong reasons, yes OK it's checked my MPB and there's a 6 month warranty but knowing my luck 6 months and a day and boom?. I think I'll keep looking, I just wanted a D500 to use with the sigma, my camera I use is the nikon Z50 which I've read is the modern version of the D500?, your thoughts on that?. Anyway, thanks again for your honest feedback,

Also try eBay - I've often had better results there for used equipment. I haven't used a Z50, but my understanding is that it's not equivalent to the D500. Some of its headline stats are better than the D500, and it will undoubtedly have a great sensor that produces excellent image quality. It isn't built for or aimed at the pro/prosumer market though, like the D500 is. What the compromises are, I'm unsure, but there will definitely be some. Maybe around the memory buffer and things like that.

Look at the flickr pages of this and the nikkor 105mm 2.8 AF (d/non-d) and you can see, it's just behind the used $100 -$125 Nikkor in micro shots........ Did you just say it's not a true 1:1 macro at all apertures, either? In what range does it shoot true 1:1 then? 7:05 the lens is trash wide open. That's horrible. I have no idea why people are recommending this lens when the FAR superior 105 2.8 Nikkor is available selling for less money too boot lol.

I love my D500. It's one of the most reliable cameras that I have ever owned. For wildlife and sports photography, it still does a reasonable job, but it is showing its age. Most modern mirrorless cameras will have the advantage when it comes to auto focus, but if you are on a tight budget or just starting out in photography and are not sure if it's your thing, it's definitely worth a look at.

Nice overview. Regarding darktable: "it does have 'some' selective editing tools". LOL. It probably has the most extensive and powerful masking/local editing features of any raw editor (free or paid). It lacks the convenience of AI masking, but drawn + parametric masks are in almost all cases more accurate and almost as fast (once you have put in the time to learn how). "Better" is very subjective, but it is objectively much more powerful than Lightroom. LR is king if you want good-enough, fast. If you want full control DT (or RawTherapee) absolutely trashes LR, with a breadth and depth of tools that an LR user can only dream of. Performance can indeed be an issue if you don't have a GPU, but that has improved dramatically over the last few versions. And as long as you're careful with the heavy modules, such as diffuse/sharpen, running on CPU only is not a problem.

Still use mine and mine was one of the first sold here. The reason? Nothing better at the file sizes and IQ. Mine used for sports and wildlife paired with the Nikin 300 f2.8. Bought a Nikon ZF on a lark to test mirrorless and I use it for my one lens travel 24-120 and the D500 comes too with the 300 attached. With the reach of a 450mm and the IQ achieved at a decent file size, I could not ask for more. Both cameras pair really well as I have no need for huge files or more than 11fps shooting. The ZF gives me better video with IBS and works and compliments the D500 as I can swap all lenses as needed. With 12-24, 70-200 and assorted old manual nikon and D-series lenses, I can happily use all on both cameras. Nice too is the newer C-batteries charge on the old charger and work in the D500 too. When shooting birds or sports with the D500 and 300 2.8 I get such great bokeh I have a hard time looking at Nikons new long lenses to use on FF. Happy with my kit as it produces great images. The DX to me was the low budget way to just say no to larger lenses and more expensive bodies. The D500 is still a keeper.

Hi Robert, Good report. I bought the D500 when it came out. Happy? Yes. It met my requirements. Does it still meet my requirements? ... Yes. Therefore "Happy Factor" should remain. At some stage soon, will I add a Z8? Probably. (Z8ii) Does that automatically mean that "Unhappy" ticket has to be attached to the D500? For me, .. No. I still use my D200 bought back in 2005. Only 10mp. However, I reall like what the CCD produces. For some of my requirements, It's still very competent. I mainly used a 4 x 5" Linholf Karden Master and Blad ELM 500 in studio. What we now call Full Frame 35m was not capable in the Pro industrial field. However, the Nikon Ftn Photomic could handle tasks that the othera cameras just couldn't. I think the words "Happy with camera" has been hijacked by retailers and promters alike. Is it still fit for purpose? ..... With a Z8 or Z9 added, will my D200 still be fit for purbose? Yes. Will I use it often, probably not.

RawTherapee is closer in form and function to ACDSee Photo Studio for Mac and ACDSee Professional (For Windows) in that it doesn't use a relational database for storing metadata, but instead, uses the natural hierarchical data structures found in all computers. I think you will find that, in general, given the same level of resources, a hierarchical data system is faster than relational, and is better suited to very large databases.(>50,000 images), though the hierarchical systems DO have a more limited search capability. Intelligent use of I search functions, coupled with filters can replicate most of what a relational database can do, however. I consider myself a bit of an ACDSee advanced user.and I know that ACDSee has expanded the natural hierarchical storage into a true hierarchical database to store metadata so that the hierarchical data can be optimized and backed up in a traditional manner. Having moved to Linux from Windows however, (Privacy & Security reasons) I know that ACDSee products do not have Linux Equivalents though I would happily pay for Linux versions of their products. RawTherapee is a reasonable replacement for ACDSee, especially so, if your backup needs are less rigorous, and a Backup of just the photos themselves will suffice. A more accurate comparison to Lightroom would be DarkTable, also free and open source software that uses a relational database and is much closer in form and function to Lr. Both RawTherapee and DarkTable are very stable on both Windows and on Linux. But in Windows, the use case for them is weaker. Neither are perfect replacements (and certainly NOT clones) for their targeted user audiences though. And if you don't want to learn something new, and just do your established workflow without having to think about it, stick with what you are currently using. And have no doubt there is nothing wrong with that. For me, as an advanced amateur, the increase in privacy and security by moving away from Windows is worth the minor inconvenience of learning something new and doing without all the third party add-ons for both Lr and ACDSee.

I personally think that overall, mirrorless cameras are better. But it's a very personal choice and if you prefer the optical viewfinder, I would say go with a DSLR. You can still capture fantastic images. Also the D7500 is fairly small for a DSLR, so mirrorless doesn't have a huge advantage there. DSLR are generally cheaper too! Thanks for watching. 😊

The 17-55 was the first nice zoom lense I ever owned, When i switched from a D7000 to a D700 i stopped using it. The D700 camera remains one of my favourite cameras, but with an already low res sensor, it was not worth ever using on crop mode (although stopped down this lens will cover the full frame) . A few years ago when everyone switched to mirrorless i picked up a D810 for cheap, and on DX crop mode you still get a 15mp image, which is plenty big enough (more resolution than FX mode on the D700 and about the same resolution as my old d7000), and I fell in love with the 17-55mm again. I have better lenses now, but theres something about this one that makes like it and continue to use it. I think it's nostalgia from the first nice zoom lens that i ever had.

Editing raw is not a problem, many apps do that well. The huge issue for a photographer that has a decade in Lightroom is the catalog and edits you have done. The only app that I found that imports the Lightroom catalog is Capture One. I imported a catalog with 70k photos, and capture one kept the structure, collections, keywords, color labels, and some very basic edits. Unfortunately I had to export all my edits (10k+) manually. Well, it sucked, but I would do it again to be free from Adobe ransmware.
