Dang if the translation for Harry Potter was around when I was a youth I could have probably learned 'Ōlelo Hawai'i one time. 😂 that's awesome not only is it great for heritage but is an insanely smart tool for second language learners.

Sooo Kamaka, are you a native speaker or an imergent speaker? Assuming the language was lost your father would be speaking imergent language? Or was it like the people of Ni'ihau (sorry if that's not where Keao was referring) where your father still obtained OG 'Ōlelo Long winded preface to ask... can Kamaka and Keao 'Ōlelo eachother? I mean if Keao speaks the OG.

Not my experience at all growing up in Hawai’i and Cali, everyone was nicer, faker even, once they found out I was part Hawaiian. I’m younger Gen X tho so maybe it was different for younger Millenials.

Hawaiians being proud of their blood, socially acceptable. A white person saying they are proud of their bloodline... that somehow is racist.

Giuseppe Maria Garibaldi was the Patriot who united the kingdom of Italy.....today Europeans, Japanese, and Chinese call themselves Hawaiian just because they were born in that land....the true Native is disappearing.....

Funny thing is in Hawaiian history blood meant next to nothing. Everything was communal, even raising children.

I had the wonderful fortune to live for a little over a year on Maui. The Hawaiian people are fantastic. Their stories and culture are so amazing. And generally they were so friendly to a haole like me from the UK.

There’s two kinds of people in this world. HAWAIIANS and those who wish they were. So yes it starts with the “Blood” and goes from there depending upon the individual and where they want to take it. It is an absolute honor to me when other people see me around and they say “ how you Hawaiian”. Be humble and take care of one another..Aloha

It's easier said than done to "get over" ourselves when us Native Hawaiians make up a whopping 0.4% of the country! I was born and raised on Oahu my whole life. Growing up here, you never saw hawaiians on TV, in popular tv shows, or advertised in windows at shops. You're right. Part of it is an insecurity. But how do you accept your identity growing up when everything around you is telling you your people "don't exist". As you grow in age, you get the wisdom and confidence! But until then growing up, as a child, when you're trying to find a sense of who you are, you just don't see it.

And then he lead a massive army, killed all the other kings on the other islands and united the islands, after throwing off all the people off the Pali. He conquered the islands and killed tens of thousands of people. Dont forget to tell that part 😉

My grandma's house had about 3 or 4 coconut trees, now no moa nothing. So sad! I hate how things have "progressed". 😢

Shoot! People on the main land have always thought how amazing it would be to be Hawaiian and live there. What we have here is yourhful insecurity. I have type 4a hair and have always been an odd ball. I did all the things as a kid, straightened my hair to match the girls around me. Tried toning down my nerdiness, tomboy(ness) and so on. I just didnt fit in my own skin. Thats the beautiful thing about gettiting older, filling in your own skin and learning to love outselves exactly as we are

That's how being native American has been for me. I got called a redskin, savage, cannibal, any name under the sun you can think of for us. That mainly happened in elementary school, I'm in my 20's now and still try to not tan and bleach my hair. Im as white passing as ever and I've never been treated better.

I had whiplash & was out of work for 6 months or more , i was a PADI recreational diver n went on a shore dive at Pupukea Id been seeing a shiatsu therapist for almost a year , after that dive he told me all the tension in my neck & shoulders was gone and i didn't need deep tissure massage weekly anymore. Maybe diving at 25' for 30 minutes allowed my body to off gas more than nitrogen or maybe more toxins that i just dont know of but my aches and pains were resolved after that. Just thought id share bc surgery is permanent alteration...

Here’s an edu. If you look at the old birth certificate, it’s says black not any other culture. 2-what’s the main starch-(rice). What do we do when we enter the house, (take of our footwear), most of the Hawaiian have two race-which is?, etc. and the list goes on and on. So you think about it. 😮

I didn't realise how many parallels there are between the Hawaiian and Irish linguistic situations are. There are a significant number of nonnative speakers who are trying to claim the linguistic heritage from native speakers (with the support of some linguists, even!) while speaking something unintelligible to native speakers. Thank you for this episode.
