Been there on June 2016,amazing experience,this is really the "Top of Europe",so high altitude that my ears were plugged up during descent with the lift,not to be missed in any case if someone is in Chamonix..

I worked as a transfer driver for tourists (Geneva airport to Chamonix/Megeve/Morzine/Aosta etc.) and treated myself to this at the end of my third season - it's €70, but worth every cent when you're there! The first stage is tame when you look at the cables...but the 2nd and steepest stage is terrifying 😱 Truly a world class feat of engineering!

Lovely Video! I hiked up the Mer de Glace some years ago to the Aiguille du Midi, and in the same trip hiked up the Grand Mulets Route to the Summit of Mont Blanc. Not too difficult with crampons & ice-axe but you need to be acclimatised with a good "head for heights" on the final arete to the Mt Blanc Summit. You also need navigation skills to avoid crevasses on the Mer de Glace & Boissons Glacier!

This is mindblowing feat of engineering.. both the lift and the structures on top of the peak. The lift has more than 30000 ft of continuous cable. Where did they make it? How did they lift it up? (I know, helicopter, but still..)
@francinesicard464
@francinesicard464 Жыл бұрын
Starting in 1909, no helicopters to carry the cables, first with mules on the first section and then on the backs of men. It still holds the record as the highest vertical ascent cable car in the world, from 1,035 to 3,842 m (3,396 to 12,605 ft).

Well, the construction of the original aerial tram/cable car system had begun in 1949, and was inaugurated in 1955; the current one (system) has existed since (was inaugurated in) 1991. There is a short documentary/video about that (how it was built), but it's in French.

@@jerrynix5206 you're welcome, Jerry! It's a short, ca. 12 minute-long film/video, called "Le fil de l'Aiguille"; it, literally, means "the thread of the needle" (kind of a pun 😃). I checked, and, unfortunately, MONT-BLANC Natural Resort, the user that posted the video, did not add captions/subtitles; I hope you'd enjoy it, though.
