As I am watching this I am also reading "I Soldiered for the Union" The Civil War Diary of William Bluffton Miller. In it he says they were issued 8 days rations (14th Corps) before a march...I'm thinking (after watching this) how on earth...

The liquid that you threw away we would call "pot liquor" and would today be frozen and used as a base for soups and stews. My mouth is watering now so I have to take a trip to the freezer and put on a stew.

Lovely to see it. Great channel. Myself, I am a 56 year old Newfoundlander and haven't been a day without salt pork in the freezer. I use it for making fish and Brewis, frying fish and wild meat, when I make soups amd stews and especially when I can meats, beans, soups and stews. Salt pork is such a lovely ingredient.

I own a Taylor's 56-50 Spencer carbine. I load a 350 grain bullet at 1300 FPS, giving it 1300 Ft. Lbs of energy. The 44 Henry Rimfire is often maligned for being underpowered. But it uses a 210 gr bullet at 1200 FPS, giving 671 Ft Lbs energy. That's extremely close to the ballistics of the 41 Remington Magnum revolver. No one ever dared call it a mouse gun. The Spencer was more powerful, the Henry more firepower. Ned Robert's book talks about his uncle hunting black bear with a 56 Spencer carbine in the 1870s and had no issues.

The older I get the more fascinated I become with how the armies spent the time between major battles. Where they camped and how, movements and everyday camp life. Fantastic video and work by the NPS! Thank you so much for helping to preserve our history!!

Attention ! A bayonnet/ Bajonett was sometimes also called Seitengewehr ( sidearm, meaning a bladed weapon). And sword: Curved Säbel ( saber) , straight Degen ( umbrella term for rapier, smallsword, spadroon, duelling epee, sport epee, foil). And cap can be Mütze, but Kapp or Kappe, now dated, also exists.

Outstanding information. I have been researching the history of the Norfolk Volunteer Rifles in the UK. They would have looked identical to Confederate soldiers and would have sounded very much like this. It is a period of music history that is not re-enacted as much on this side of the pond so it is lovely to get a sense of exactly how they would have come across.
