Hi bodnet (I could not find any other location to ask for credit), I just wondered if I could possibly use some of your footage (mainly the FGE footage) for a video on my channel, Vanmanyo (with appropriate credit). Many thanks

Bristol University could use the land. They are developing the former Royal Mail Depot site. Alternatively it could be developed as medium rise flats to ease Bristol's housing shortage. A new southern entrance to Tempe Meads is also on the cards so once development on the adjacent brown field land starts to pick up who knows?

The Hastings sets were made famous by the Hither Green Disaster of 1967. 1007 was the leading set that had sides torn off and severe damage in general. After the disaster 1007 ran as a 5 car formation. The trailing set was 1017 that survived the smash.

I used to stretch my legs out and dig my heels down on this ride. Full force strain, from arms holding that bar at front You sat on a low, flat seat with just a lap belt across you. Then off you went. This ride always sticks in my mind as one of the scariest. It was familiar at the travelling fair in 80's. I last went on this in mid 90's (Cambridgeshire) just to experience it again, as I had not seen one for so long. Bring it back. Imagine getting stuck on this when facing the ground.

Trains with windows you can stick your head out of - almost consigned to history, and probably the most fun you can have on the railway. Still, one more year with the 37s, then - as they said with the M&GN in 1959 - "That's yer lot"

In 1982 Robert Wynns and Sons were incorporated into Wrekin Roadways, forming a new company called Wynns Heavy Haulage. Around 2 years later, this company was incorparated with Sunter Brothers, forming another new company called United Heavy Haulage. This company didn't last long and a further amalgamation took place with Econofreight, forming Econofreight Heavy Haulage. Wynns remaining vehicle's were painted the blue and white colours of Econofreight. If you would like further reading on Wynns Road Haulage, i recommend a book by Paul Heaton, The Wynns Fleet.

This Clock looks like the John Wildings design, You can still purchase his book "How to make a Congreve Clock" it is step by step of how it is done. Though not for the feint hearted a lot of work! I have been making two of them on and off for the last ten years and they may be finished next year with luck. Eric if your clock is the Wilding design the ball is stainless steel 7/16 inch. The clock plates are 12 inches square and the height is approximately 20 inches and even higher in the case. One of these clocks went for £15.000 so far cheaper to roll your sleeves up and make one for your self. The ball does have enough energy to unlock the movement the long leavers are counterbalanced so needing very little force is needed to move them. Finally the clocks time keeping is non existent they can gain or loose a minute's a day, but fantastic mechanical eye candy!!!!!

I am not understanding how it works. Energy can be neither created nor destroyed, right. How is one side of plate rising up with the ball being on the rising side. Usually, in a seesaw... loaded side goes down right! Please can you explain..

SO i had to hold onto the bar for dear life and i was coming out of my seat and almost hitting my head on the roof!AND i hit my ankle on a metal bar there for the footrest and idk what i did to it but it seriously hurt all of this in year 7 in a secondary school! Also did i mention i got put in the cart alone and two only people were at the back of me

Excellent vid with the all important great sounds; thanks for posting. Somebody `high up' in Hastings Diesels sent me this explanation taken from his Traction Training booklet (1968) which I don't suppose he'd mind me sharing with others interested in the detail of how a DEMU works:- Regarding the notching sequence listed below is what happens when each of the seven power notches are applied:- Notch 1:- The supply to the operating coils of the reversers throw them for the required direction of travel. The Generator Field Contactor Coil (GFC) no.1 is energised, its contacts close and a supply from the auxiliary generator is made available for excitation of the main generator field, a measure of resistance in its circuit ensures only a moderate field strength. (Low Volts). The Main Contactor Coils (MC) are energised (MC1 and MC2) and the main generator output is applied to the traction motors. The engine speed remains at idle (450 rpm). Notch 2:- GFC 2 coil is energised, its contacts close, and a proportion of the resistances in circuit with the main generator field is cut out. This increases the excitation and the output of the main generator (increased volts), allowing it to produce more current for the traction motors and higher speed. Engine still at idle 450rpm. Notch 3:- GFC 3 closes and a further proportion of resistance in the main generator field is cut out, causing greater excitation, higher output voltage, and further increase in tractive speed. Engine still at 450rpm. Notch 4:- Engine Governor (EG) 2 solenoid in the Engine Speed Control unit is energised, causing a change in the mechanical setting of the Engine Speed Governor, raising engine speed to 620rpm. Higher output from Generator, increase in tractive speed. Notch 5 :- The auxiliary generator supply to the Load Regulator is made available, so that the regulator when operated by the engine speed governor, automatically adjusts the field strength of the main generator to keep the engine fully loaded. Engine at 620rpm. Notch 6 :- EG 2 solenoid is de-energised and EG 3 is energised causing a further change in the mechanical setting of the Engine Speed Governor, increasing engine speed to 750 rpm. Notch 7 :- EG 2 solenoid is re-energised to supplement EG 3 which increases engine speed to maximum 850 rpm. The Load Regulator cuts the field divert resistances in and out as required.
