What a legend. When I first watched Test cricket on TV in the late 70s, my two heroes were Botham and DW Randall. Botham because of his heroics and also hailing from my beloved Somerset, and Arkle because he was such an entertainer. His century in the Centenary Test was one of the truly great innings, and what a batsman he was on his day. As for his fielding, anyone thinking of taking a quick single to him at cover would qualify as being insane. I wonder just how many other kids of my generation fell in love with the game after watching this jovial gentleman go about his business. One of England's most loved players without a doubt.

DW Randall was my hero when I was at school. I could bowl a bit but couldn’t bat. So I focused on being a great fielder, I watched him on TV whenever I could and copied his style and manner. I did become a really good fielder in front of the bat. I was rubbish in the slips but anywhere from square leg round to point I was at ease. Thanks DWR you helped me get the most out of my cricket.

That is so cool. My favourite English player from the late 70's. Saw him once when he bowled more than he batted!

Worth 30 runs before picking up his bat. You don't take a crafty single when he's fielding

As much as I love listening to this quartet, I still think Gas House Gang was tighter - but having brothers matching tone colors so well gives them a huge advantage for that. (What's the piece that Voces8 sings to them? It sounds an awful like an "Ave Maria" but isn't in Latin... I'd ask on that video, but the comments are turned off.) Legend says that Barcelona Crossing was named after a Spanish seafarer who saved the life of of a man who's Father owned the land at that time. As the Spanish seafarer was from Barcelona the father out of gratitude named the area after the Spaniards city.

Did someone build this chamber for them to sing in? It is magnificent. I wasn't being catty. They broke the last chord so thoroughly that after hearing these amazing guys sing so perfectly for the entire song, definitely not barbershop 101, or even 402, but the graduate doctorate course. Then blowing the last chord, which is definitely not barbershop, is perfectly understandable... The Easternaires' version is scratchy, but they did not blow that chord. Then again, they sang together through two basses and nearly three decades. I'm certain they would approve of this. The Easternaires were always more driven by artistry than rules. I knew them all. And I know all these guys, too. Fine men, with amazing talent. Every time I hear my scratchy recording of the Easternaires, I also listen to this, which is much like going back in time to an afterglow with the old quartet. They were that good. The respect these guys show for them is wonderful. They sing it as they did. Perfectly. And they were very good, For three decades. They came in second, I think, to the Buffalo Bills. And they were in Top Tens until the 70s were old. That's a lot of singing. God Bless them all, old and new. Geniuses at music and their art.

Remember Eddie Hemmings going nuts at New Road in County Championship game ..he couldn't see him anywhere on Boundary...he was hidden inside the Wheelie Bin...then later on he was sat in the stand ...fantastic character and in his prime as good as anybody to take the field in the Covers

When was this? It's difficult to see his face to get an idea of his age there. His gait is a giveaway as to who it is, though, and his build looks the same as when he was playing professionally. No middle-age + spread.

Hi John, from memory it around 1994, shortly before he became coach at Cambridge University, he was helping the St Neots Catholic priest run coaching sessions & I was fortunate enough to have been asked to help him as I'd recently passed my senior coaching badge. I believe he gave his Eng/Aus centenary medal to the priest Father Dennis Finbow. Derek is a fantastic down to earth, friendly, honest & all round lovely human being. It was such a pleasure spending time with him.
