I am thru hiking next year, and I want to set myself up to be ready for the after hike period. Do you think there is anything that can be done before the hike is over (or even started) to make that transition home less chaotic or easier to adjust to?

You’re young yet. Try not to get stuck in a place you don’t feel passion. I was a nurse for 30 years but always wanted to play percussion and hike. Follow your heart. The indoors and the rat race are stressful. We get out and walk everyday. If not, my autistic adult son is not mentally settled. Nice you’re running. Swimming was my thing. Goals seem to help people getting back to the real world.😊❤

Awesome Sharon and I think Chris! You are a trooper with the road walking! Tip about knee sleeves, when I do CrossFit, I wear Rock Tape Knee Sleeves, they are tighter. For AT and hiking, switched to Bear Klomplex. They are more breathable but still offer support. Only a friendly suggestion!!! ❤

Bravo to your 30 mile day. Impressive achievement. A company called Exo Mountain Gear does a 50 mile day hike challenge. Up for that next? 30 miles is nearly the length of the Greenbelt Trail across the width of Long Island including miles of road walking. One of my hikes to do. With no cars, the AT was safer to hike. As a veteran, thanks for paying tribute to the Vets Memorial and thanks for your appreciation. Kudos to Snickers Ice Cream Bars. Thanks for the views and pleasant commentary. Wishing you peace and good fortune. Happy Trails!

Cheers to a nice hiking trail. Seems like easy going less the water a tick situation. I always wear pants when hiking in the woods. I had Lyme disease. Big health effect for a long time. Recommend avoiding that. As a military vet, it would be “zero” not “oh.” Funny! As “Cobweb”Rose, I thought you would like spider webs. Where I once lived, there were barn spiders. Nearly as big as my thumb. They engineered beautiful spider webs. Nice camp spot. Wishing you safe passage and Happy Trail!

I have a question about your puffy. I’m 5’3” and 120#. But need room to get in and out with no ROM in one shoulder. What size did you wear. I’m thinking I need small and not medium to maneuver since I can’t raise my arm. Thanks for any advice!
@cobwebroseonthetrail2447
@cobwebroseonthetrail2447 Ай бұрын
I wear a medium cotopaxi fuego hooded down pullover, but my Lighthear Gear hoodie in this video is a small. The medium cotopaxi down pullover is a little big, but it keeps me warm. If you have a bad shoulder, I’d recommend looking at a zip up puffy so that you can put your limited ROM arm in first and not have to worry about raising your arm to get it in a pullover. I think a small should fit you really well if you do a zip!

For road races, I use an elastic race belt which has two cord locks to attach my race numbers. Some race belts also come with elastic loops sewn on to hold gel packets (which are useful for longer races). For trail races, I've tied/looped a short length of thin cord with two cord locks to the back of my hydration pack and attach the race number to that.

In the 7.5 miles, I found 2, but they were within the first 2 miles. The Far Out map is a little more difficult to read for the MST. The official paper/PDF guides from Friends of the MST look good, though. I’ll be using a mix of those and Far Out to plan my sections.

Hi! I'm so surprised by your pick of the "flattest" section. I'm brand new to backpacking and my very first overnight was after hiking the first 5 miles out of PenMar. OMG, I thought it was so hard, lol!!! But probably that has to do with the facts that this was my first time carrying a fully loaded pack, I'm new to hiking, and I'm in my 60s. I know I'll only get better as I do this more often. BTW, I really enjoyed following your thru hike!
@cobwebroseonthetrail2447
@cobwebroseonthetrail2447 2 ай бұрын
Thank you so much! I’m so happy that you got out there and tried backpacking! That first hike is hard no matter where you go. I picked that section as the “flat” one because in comparison to the whole AT (think about sections like the Whites with lots of elevation gain and loss), it is “flatter” in the sense that you are doing a lot less overall up and down each day. Flat is really a misnomer for anywhere on the AT in my opinion. Happy trails!!

Hey Cobweb Rose - it's me again -- from Pennsylvania. On a previous post I mentioned that me and my niece (from Asheville!) are going to Trail Days this month. I'm in the area/staying 5 days but she has only Sat/Sun. We wanted to do a short hike to see Grayson Highlands and the ponies. Looks like it's quite a walk from Damascus - maybe too far for an "out and back" hike. Do you know if there's a spot we could drive to & park for a short(er) walk to the most scenic area of GH? (My niece says that Max Patch is easily accessible from a nearby parking lot, so something convenient like that for GH would be ideal.) Thought you might be familiar. I don't want to spend any time missing the festivities of Trail Days. Is your tramily coming in for it? You'd be so welcome to join us (our A.T. celebrity guests!) for the GH hike if it can happen. Thank you so much - Barry Holquist

Hi! Yes! We’ll be at Trail Days! We can’t wait! If you’re looking for an out and back to the best of the Highlands, I recommend hiking in from Massie Gap! You can drive to the trailhead from Damascus, and you can join up with the AT by following the trail towards Mt. Rogers (but you should see ponies without having to go all the way to Mt. Rogers). I hope you guys have a blast!!
