Being staked in, the u-joint is not easily replaceable unless one has access to a staking machine; welding in retainers can arc the needle bearings and destroy the joint, and either runs the risk of the joint not being perfectly centered. One could have the factory yoke machine for circlips, but at that price, an entirely new shaft is beneficial. The shafts deflect and go out of balance over time. I replaced the entire two-piece shaft and CSB with one from Driveshaft Specialist in Texas for only $550 so it wasn’t worth my time replacing the joint and getting it perfectly true.

Thanks! That’s a big help. I also noted you said that the commonly used GMB joint used on pre LCI e83’s does not fit correct? That info alone would save me the hassle of trying. It’s 1K in Canada for a new shaft so I’m really weighing my options. I do note some mild play in the splines as well on the upper side so maybe that’s contributing to my vibes when letting off the gas at certain speeds too. Rear joint also and a small amount of play. Doh.

Sorry I meant GMB 220-1670 part number. I know ours is staked but the actual joint is the same as pre lci just a pain in the ass to replace I would assume? Or is it actually a different size. The carriers at the rear look the same. Cheers!

@@SolarSurfLeo Here's what I recall from a few years ago: 2004-2006 u-joint Bearing cups: 0.947" diameter Yoke-yoke distance (across the trunnion): 1.641". The yoke must be square. 2007-2010 u-joint Bearing cups: 0.947" diameter Yoke-yoke distance (across the trunnion) on the shaft: 1.412"-1.474". The yoke is NOT square; the yoke ears splay. Yoke-Yoke distance (across the trunnion) on the differential-side flange yoke: 1.350"-1.446". It too isn't square. The bores in the diff-side yoke measure 0.928". The bores in the shaft-side yoke measure 0.945". The u-joint would physically press in the bores, but retaining clips couldn't be used without machining both yokes. Once that starts being needed, then the time and labor involved may become cost-prohibitive. Check out Driveshaft Specialists in Texas, they have a website.

Good stuff. I just read your entire thread on bimmerforums. One last question - would a pre lci driveshaft fit into our cars? It appears it might but not sure of other constraints. There is one here at the yard, but don’t want to bother if it won’t work. The older pre-lci appear to use that locking collar design and a slightly different guibo - but again it should work in theory.

The whole shaft may or may not fit. The shaft varied in length between models and was different depending on the year, engine, transmission and rear differential combination. Mine being N52 6L45 is 1283mm in length. Consult RealOEM.com to find the length of yours based on your specific build. Also get a quote from a driveshaft place, particular one that caters to commercial OTR trucks. When I was exploring that option, the shops is called said they do “lots” of pre-LCI cars, but almost no LCI cars.

Castrol Euro 0w-40. M1 is great but a little loud due to additives. UOAs on the Castrol have always come back stellar, even nearing 200k miles. Haven’t used Pennzoil as it’s not LL-01 rated, nor has been to my knowledge.

The sound is like rare long lost vinyl LP to this 45yr old guy. My first vehicle was a 1984S15 with the 2.8LV6. It may have lacked HP, but the torque was perfectly fine. The rumble at idle and the sound of the revs are so good! The Dynomax exhaust hasn't done anything weird to alter the tone of the exhaust note, it sounds true to the original! I'm selfishly glad you haven't swapped-out the 2.8L. It'll last a long time if the pushrods don't get abused with high-revs, my mom revved mine until it started knocking...then a rebuild. The long throws on the 5speed shifter were awesome, I've kneecapped many unsuspecting passengers shifting into 5th gear a long time ago. The truck naturally sits nice and low with the stock delco shocks, combine that with the awesome power steering and you got an excellent highway & city ride. It eats up long bends & bumps and yet it's still manoeuvrable for its length. It had a huge 75L gas tank, I was getting 770km on a full tank. That's 23mpg carrying all that heavy steel with a V6! Thanks for keeping the stock original GMC squarebody alive! Newer S10extreme were nicknamed "wife trucks" back in the day, I still agree with that. Nothing looks better than an original squarebody S15 to this day. The perfect street truck!

Thanks. I do love this old truck, and am actually going through the 2.8 right now: adjusted valve lash, replacing timing chain/sprockets, carb rebuild, all terrain tires, clutch, degreasing/painting the engine/compartment, etc.

@@dukedkt442 That's gonna be excellent! A fun, economical, daily driver that looks cool and sounds cool! Good Job! If I ever see an S15 on the side in my neck of the woods for $700 2.8V6 with the 5 speed, it's mine. That truck is so easy to fix! All parts should be easy to find for that truck. My tires were p195/70 R14. It sat low like a low-rider.

No problem, hope it helps. I’ve now put over 5k miles on the exhaust, and it never gets old. Last week I took it NY-OBX and back, and it was unobtrusive enough cruising that my 1 and 3 year olds slept for hours. Open up the throttle though and it sounds like a Chevy small block should. I’m very satisfied with it, especially given the price point.

No change in fuel economy but a noticeable increase in power because my stock flapper was freezing shut in winter. It also squeaked annoyingly when switching V8-V4 and back when it did work. There’s no drone and only a slight audible difference in V4, nothing like the “helicopter” noise found in other systems. It’s a fantastic system for the money!
