Like Ritchie Richardson said, Curtley Ambrose was the difference in that series (and memory serves me correctly, the host nation were the favorites going into the series). Without him, I don't see the Windies winning a single test match. For me however, Brian Lara's 277 in the third test was the turning point of the entire series. Australia were 1-0 up and had just posted 500+ in their innings. Lara came to the crease with West Indies down two early wickets, and went on to play one of the best innings I've ever seen. Him getting run out (and I put that on Carl Hooper) was the only way the Aussies could've gotten him. West Indies were able to salvage a draw in the third test, and were just 1-0 down with two tests to go. Ambrose took care of the rest!

Close series, very tough on both teams. For WI this was their last great side but luck, momentum, courage got them through. Australia played their part in this series, seriously unlucky in Brisbane and a fine margin in Adelaide but a brilliant win at MCG. Many heroes on both sides but when it comes down to it Ambrose was the the guy to stand up and be counted. A true legend, fearless warrior and utterly decent human being.

Totally agree. Should have been a sign to the authorities in the Caribbean that the rest of the world was catching up while we were rapidly declining. The heroes of the WI for this series: Ambrose, Walsh and Lara carried the team for the rest of the decade. Which means that other than Adams, nobody else was coming in to replace the retired legends. It was a sign of how the standards of cricket in the caribbean were not as high as they should have been.

@@kunalsingh3121 dude don't say he is Minnow basher,he smashed every great bowlers in that era I don't think SA,AUS ,PAK ,IND is minnow basher at that time he scored 3 hundreds in India,hit first T20 hundred against SA in SA against the likes of steyn,pollock ,morne.... Scored Test centuries against every test playing nations in overseas, scored 2 triple hundreds that too one against SL in SL ... Smahsed Lee, akthar, waqar everyone... He has set some records which can't be broken... in T20s he is all time great... He gone through some heart problems otherwise he would have played more test matches & ODIs... I don't think anyone time the ball like gyale did at the age of 41 ... I'm a big fan of RCB , I've became fan of RCB after seeing Gayle batting in 2011 IPL... KOHLI ABD Gayle is emotion
