The famous 94 foot classic gaff schooner ((114 foot loa) Bill of Rights built in the early 70s sold for much less than $100,000 ten years ago. While she looks a bit worn, is still in good shape, still sails charter most every week in San Diego. I crewed on her for several years. A wonderful experience.

What are the latest planes than can be civilian owned and flown like this? I don't mean legally, I mean from a practical point of view, like maintaining engines and electronics. Not radar, just the electronics which keep it flying.

I've seen F16s, F18s, Mig29s and Su27s come and go over the years, so that would be the newest "types" available. The amount of money you need to purchase, maintain and fuel these birds is astronomical. A fill up alone is approx $5k, and that gets you about 2 hours of flight time.

Some not-so-new types that frequently are for sale are A4, F5, Mig21, Draken, L29, L39, Mirage 3, Mirage 2000, Mirage F1.

ATAC (I believe) was on the verge of purchasing dozens (!!!) of F18A/Bs from Australia, but instead sent their aircraft to The Ukraine. One can imagine that they weren't overly pleased about this.

I was thinking more about the electronics, because once microchips enter the picture, there's no way to make your own, say, Z80 or 8008 or the military equivalent. You could probably use a modern chip with special support ships to simulate the output, but would anyone?

Yes, parts supply is certainly a problem. You aren't even allowed to make your own parts, as only certified parts can be used, to keep the aircraft legal. I suppose you could make your own parts, but the cost of certification would be astronomical. Purchasing a warehouse full of serviceable spares would be the only way. The purchase price of the aircraft is only the tip of the iceberg.
