Not sure why these get suggested in my feed. I have zero interest in tying flies, and have never searched this kind of content. Does anyone know why i keep seeing them???

Nice! How important is it to match the hatch with flies? And if a spot gets a lot of pressure with flies do fish get wary of certain patterns?
@thecalfisher23 күн бұрын
Matching the hatch is important only if the trout are specifically feeding one type or stage of insect. Even then, a suggestive pattern in the right size and shape will work better than an exact imitation. When the fish aren't keyed into a hatch, then pretty much anything presented correctly will catch them. Of course, some fisheries are so pressured that things like shiny beads don't work because they scare the fish. For instance, the shad on the American River won't eat bright, shiny beads this year (at least thats what I've found) but are fine with anything that looks remotely like a mayfly as long as it has a dark shiny bead like purple or nickel or a matte brown or olive bead.

Great video and brown. I went up yesterday and saw that same house cat😂. If you hike up further there are some bigger browns up there. I got skunked yesterday but great little stream. I was thinking there may be small fish in that little stream when I got out of my car. Had my Tenkara with me. Should have tried it out.

Thanks! I was going to go upstream more but there was a dude fishing and I didn't want to high-hole him and I didn't have too much time to hike too much farther. I will be back there because it really seems that not many people know about this stream...
@brandondooley50912 ай бұрын
@@thecalfisher ya I agree it is not well known at all. That’s so funny you broke out the San Juan worm because last night after fishing I was thinking I should have at least tried the worm. I went through a bunch of different flies and not even a bit. I’m still new to fly fishing so I’m sure my presentation didn’t help much and that steam seems easy to spook fish if you’re not careful.
@thecalfisher2 ай бұрын
The San Juan Worm is my favorite fly for off-color water, and now I just use it all the time on my indicator rig. What exactly was your rig that you used yesterday?
@brandondooley50912 ай бұрын
@@thecalfisher I was using a double nymph rig with an indicator for awhile on the way up the stream and then on the way back down I threw on a pats rubber leg size 10 with an indicator to mix it up. I recently learned to tight line with a guide up North Eric Leslie and may try that next time.
@thecalfisher2 ай бұрын
It could be that you weren’t using enough weight or not getting deep enough. Usually if I’m not getting fish it’s one of those things. How deep were you fishing from your split shot? Tightlining might be the ticket-some people just do better with different techniques. That’s really cool you got guided by Eric Leslie! I love his channel and I’m subbed!
@fuzzy_little_duckling2 ай бұрын
Beautiful brownie! And the jumping was so epic!! 🐟 Have you considered trying streamers or those mini sinking jerkbaits? Seems like the trout in these rivers like em a lot
@thecalfisher2 ай бұрын
Thank you! Yes, I am for sure going to try streamers sometime (especially because there are massive browns in there) but streamers and jerkbaits tend to not catch as many fish as nymphs so I just wanted to get some fish before I moved on to targeting bigger fish. 90% of a trout's diet is drift feeding (eating bugs that flow down to them) so thats why nymphing and float fishing with bait work better than streamers, spinners, or jerkbaits.
@fuzzy_little_duckling2 ай бұрын
@@thecalfisher That's awesome, can't wait to see another vid at this spot. As for trout diet, thats right for young trout but for the size trout you caught, bro was for sure eating some other things. medium and big sized trout eat some bugs but their diet is also crayfish, smaller fish (big browns be cannibalizing), and anything else they can fit in their mouth
@fuzzy_little_duckling2 ай бұрын
@@thecalfisher honestly just depends on the conditions and the fish's mood really.
@thecalfisher2 ай бұрын
Yes but still most of a trouts diet is insects because it takes the least energy to get the most food. That trout wasn't that big so its still eating insects. Look at TahoeTroutHunter on Fishbrain. He catches lots of big trout on tiny flies.
@fuzzy_little_duckling2 ай бұрын
@@thecalfisher true. depends on location and time too ig. Like if there's a ton of bugs everywhere they wont spend that extra energy on chasing down small fish. vs when theres only a few bugs available, it might be more worthwhile to go for other species. example is lake tahoe, those big rainbows and browns cruise the shoreline looking for easy-to-catch crayfish hiding between the boulders. so they dont have to spend much energy and they eating a lot too --> big fishies As for Al, most of his catches (at least the recent ones) have been on normal/big streamers im pretty sure. which posts were the lil flies?

HORRIBLE VIDEO!! The practice of showcasing two products in a single video often falls short of providing meaningful insights to consumers. These videos tend to prioritize surface-level comparisons of visual aesthetics over substantive analysis of product features and benefits. As a result, viewers may be left with a superficial understanding of the products, hindering their ability to make informed purchasing decisions. Furthermore, the proliferation of these showcase videos can exacerbate consumerism and materialism within society. By emphasizing the appeal of product appearances without delving into their functionality or value proposition, these videos contribute to a culture that prioritizes style over substance. This can lead to impulsive buying behaviors based solely on visual appeal, rather than considering factors such as quality, durability, or practicality. In addition, the prevalence of product showcase videos may inadvertently promote excessive consumption and wasteful spending habits. By glamorizing the acquisition of multiple products and encouraging viewers to compare and contrast their visual attributes, these videos fuel a desire for constant novelty and accumulation. This can perpetuate a cycle of consumption that not only strains individual finances but also contributes to environmental degradation through increased production and waste generation. Moreover, the emphasis on showcasing two products in a single video can create an unrealistic standard of comparison for consumers. Products may be selectively presented or manipulated to highlight certain features while downplaying others, leading to a skewed perception of their overall value. This can result in disappointment or dissatisfaction among consumers who base their expectations on the curated content of these videos, rather than real-world performance or utility. In conclusion, while the practice of showcasing two products in a video may appear informative at first glance, it often fails to provide a comprehensive understanding of their merits and drawbacks. Instead of focusing solely on visual comparisons, consumers should seek out more in-depth reviews and analyses that consider a broader range of factors, such as functionality, quality, and long-term value. By fostering a more critical and discerning approach to consumption, individuals can make more informed choices that align with their needs and values.

The Truckee has a bunch of fish and is fishing great right now but runoff has just started so it’s a bit tough even for the guides.
