Why not put the knife vertically into a stump or similar, then use both hand to 'pull' the wood through...using the knife as a vertical 'plane'.

I just went camping and cooked a good old steak and some eggs. Thanks for sharing P.S. just use some goggles or snorkel mask when your cooking and your eyes will be smoke free!
